No, that was exactly my point.

The Flames needs public funding to afford a new arena.
The Flames need a new area to stay financially viable in the NHL.
If they dont get a new arena the owners will sell the team and then the new owners will relocate elsewhere.
The Flames don't need public funding to build a building. They just don't need to spend to the cap on player salaries, then they could afford to contribute as a tenant to a new building (whether they own that building or a RE investment consortium in which they are involved owns the building).

Build a worse team, that nobody wants to pay to watch, lose revenue.... but profit? Send Murray an email, lets get this figured out and arena built!

The difference between cap floor and ceiling is only $20m. Still not enough to pay for an arena. Maybe enough for interest haha.

How many 10's of millions was the Flames new arena again? How many years do we need to save our pennies?

Flames are supposed to be one of the higher revenue teams in the league.

Certainly they can build an arena. But why bother when you can convince taxpayers to pay for some of it?

Besides Vancouver, you'd think that Calgary would be a prime city to live in and play hockey, out of all the Canadian markets.

Conclusion: tax dollars are not for a new building, but to subsidize player salaries.

Tax dollars for an arena are a subsidy for sure. They are a form of subsidy that is reasonably popular though.

Maybe this travesty of an off-season serves as a wake-up call for CSEC to pony up and get the arena built before more players leave and the fanbase lose their patience.

CSEC can start a GoFundMe. I'll donate $20 to help with the cause.

you're not far off, the answer is to charge a levy on each ticket sold (hockey, concerts, whatever) to pay for the building.

Speed limits are higher in Columbus.
Is it possible Gaudreau thought Columbus was Columbia?

Flames fans always thing we're a bigger market than we actually are. In terms of reach, the oilers are easily 3-4x bigger even before McDavid. There's very little Flames fans outside of Calgary, aside from ex-Calgarians, and there's no loyalty to the team.

Revenue wise, hard to tell as those #'s are pretty secretive. Our ticket prices are a hell of a lot cheaper than other Canadian markets, and there are a fuck ton of unsold seats every non playoff game, even with a season like we had this year.

I'd say we're comparable to Vancouver in market reach, and probably slightly less in revenue if I had to make a guess there. Basically a small step up from Winnipeg.
There's a lot of cheap tickets available in 'desirable' jurisdictions. Ie Florida, Arizona.

Tkachuk is overpaid and will fade into obscurity in the retirement state.

Really like this trade even though it is risky with both being UFA. Huby is gonna get a similar contract to Tkachuk's maybe a tad more.

Can't begin to describe how big of a win this is. Huge Huberdeau fan.
    Weegar is a 1D.
We got a fairly decent prospect.
    1st in 2025.

    Wow.
