my company is hiring for Power System Electricians and High Voltage Techs, pay is pretty good and we are hiring for Edmonton, Calgary, and Regina. Not much up north right now. Definitely lots of opportunities but the specialized skillset is hard to fill as a lot of the north guys doing co-gen don't translate well in a substation.
Definitely a good field to get into, very niche and if you know what your doing should pay well and be a good career. We contact them during turnarounds lots and always hard to find the top notch guys.

Not necessarily unpopular, but home builders are desperate for framers right now.

I am an automotive technician. I have been in the trade for just short of 20 years. I like it, it is not a easy job. You will work hard and spend a few hours a week of your own personal time studying and learning.
School costed me under 10g's, but you will purchase $50 000 to $100 000 of tools that you will sell for penny's on the dollar when you retire. Once you have collected the majority of your tools you will only spend a few hundred a year maintaining them.
Manual dexterity is a skill that has to be developed. If you did not grow up with tools in your hands, you have a sharp learning curve ahead of you. Doesn't mean you can't learn it though. You must be fit, if you are overweight you are going to have a hard time putting vehicles on the lift and getting under dashboards. Without regular exercise and stretching, you are going to hurt.
I am a diagnostic tech, I spend most of my day sitting in the driver's seat with a computer or accessing a connector to scope some circuit. I really enjoy technology, automotives is really good for this. Every year vehicles become more software based instead of mechanical. It is a sink or swim environment. If you put in effort, get good at your job you will basically never be unemployed. The dealership offers many things that appeal to me, but really dislike how they pay their technicians. I have always found good jobs in the aftermarket and have had the ability to pick my employment.
Trades generally offer a poor career path. While I agree with this, but keep an open mind. Try new roles and see what you like. You don't have to turn bolts for your whole life. There is other options, you just have to seek them out.
You won't get rich fixing cars, but you can throw a rock and get a job.

Is there talk in your industry about how more EVs will change the employment outlook?

From talking with some of the older tech's that I have worked with throughout the years, in the late 80's when everything went from carbs to fuel injection. It drove out a lot of the techs that couldn't keep up with technology. The same thing is happening with EV's. They require way less maintenance, all of the easy tasks are disappearing and what is left is actual problems that require real problem solving skills to figure out. Historically the automotive industry has pulled talent from "the good old boys" farm type kids. That is changing, you want to fix cars you will have to understand electricity down to the molecular level and have a basic understanding of software structures and artificial intelligence. When I started in this trade vehicles had like one or two computers, now many have 100+ on multiple networks.

Worth a re-visit here as we hear about a shortage of workers in many sectors. I suspect wages will need to re-calibrate in some places to get people to work.

I think it’s beyond wages at this point… seeing so many general skills/labour type of positions lately where people are doing FT hours but are not permanent, full time staff… either short contracts or casual/PT statuses “officially” essentially removing all employee benefits while still not paying them anymore for the role

Yep there’s a role I would be interested in that pays just a tiny bit more than I earn now per hour but it’s 38 hours a week with no benefits, has been posted for 3+ months and I think they are finally realizing they have to suck it up and make it a permanent full time 40 hour role with benefits.

Short term, part time, contract, that seems to be how a lot of places operate.

Many people were hoping that covid would return and the gov't would hand out more free money.

People are re-entering the workforce as they realize this isn't happening.

We have been trying to hire basic labour help for months to no avail. People take the position, half complete orientation and maybe 1 out or 5 show up for work. No one wants to work. Full time with benefits after 3 moth probation. Anyone have kids looking to work? Only need to have a way to get to work.... Let me know

I feel they just don't want to work, might think they are entitled to more.....one kid called after 1 week and said that if he could start at 9am, it would be better. He can't make it to work for 7....no joke.
