Unpopular careers with a shortage of workers

"Great Resignation" and "Lying Flat" Pretty much sums up the worldwide situation. Noone wants to work.

-Dual ticketed refrigeration/electricians can make good coin ($50-60/hr) but you need to be good.

-Industrial electricians can do good as well but you need to know I&C, have certs etc. and it really depends on where you end up working. Most of the industrial sparkies I know have a diploma in EET + journeyman. This path can open all kinds of doors to I&C work, power generation, linesman, utilities etc. Having only a ticket you will be up north working crazy OT. (afaik there are about 5000 unemployed electricians in AB currently)

-Machinist is a bit dead end long term imo, $30-38/hr. (unless your also a top CAM programmer or own your own shop)

-Sheet metal mechanic can be quite lucrative (owner-mechanical contractor)

-Millwrights are a dime a dozen and overly saturated. You will probably start your career working at a meat packing plant, shift work in crap conditions. On average I would say it is fairly back breaking work.

-Welding Engineering Tech diploma I think is a really good bet especially if O&G picks up. You can be a 3rd party inspector in all kinds of industries or QC work. I know several welding/mechanical inspectors that make well into 6 figures. (same goes for EET diploma + journeyman for electrical inspectors, but again you need to be a walking code book and really know your stuff)

-Auto Mechanic: no idea now days

-Plumbing: no idea

-Autobody = almost the lowest paid trade with terrible working conditions for your health

-I&C Tech is a good trade but don't expect to earn vast amounts of money going the apprentiship route without the diploma

-Welder: I know several welders that make good money. Be good at tig, have your b pressure ticket or work lots of OT

-Electric motor systems tech is one ticket I almost never hear of. A combination with an electrician ticket can open some interesting opportunities


Caveat to my post. Everything depends on your competency, who you know (especially) and the right opportunities

Gas turbine contractors regardless if it's aero or frame they are generally always busy. The O&M have their core guys on staff and usually sub contract when turn arounds happen. For the most part these guys are millwrights and wrench turners. This is pretty much the same on the steam turbine side too.

Aero Installations right now is also booming...Wattbridge (I think) in the States has just bought 30 LM6000s, 6 of them are going in Texas pretty quick here, and I think 5 of them are going in Arizona. Also the big LNG project up at Kitimat still has a couple of LMS100s to go in

Hot side is what’s different, depending what it’s designed for.

Operation is cool AF, maintenance is an utter bitch for every single thing - it's a frame 5 booster at the front, with an uprated LM6000 as a "supercore" and then a 6 stage PT driving the genny

my company is hiring for Power System Electricians and High Voltage Techs, pay is pretty good and we are hiring for Edmonton, Calgary, and Regina. Not much up north right now. Definitely lots of opportunities but the specialized skillset is hard to fill as a lot of the north guys doing co-gen don't translate well in a substation.
