My general rule is that most engineers should be fired.
Not hiring _________ M.Eng, PMP in the first place is a huge step towards not firing them later.

We have been trying to hire basic labour help for months to no avail. People take the position, half complete orientation and maybe 1 out or 5 show up for work. No one wants to work. Full time with benefits after 3 moth probation. Anyone have kids looking to work? Only need to have a way to get to work.... Let me know
I doubt it's that "people don't want to work". It's just that you're not paying enough for what you're asking people to do. It's a labor job, so it's only suited to people who can do that labor. Is it more than they could make at a grocery store, or fast food joint? Can they make rent on this money?

I wonder if there is some effective mechanism to figure it all out.

People are re-entering the workforce as they realize this isn't happening.
Inflation is also playing a role to get people back out but it's also making a bunch of people jumping ships.

Skilled labor is an issue too, not enough supply and demand is rising. Can't keep an IT Sec chair warm as it's lucrative to be a contractor right now in that field.

But what if they are great big tits and the engineer works at Wonderbra?

People complaining about this are the same ones who only use manned checkouts, because automation steals jobs. I'd rather have more staff dedicated towards store maintenance and cleanliness, customer service and product restocking than someone scanning my grocery items. Same thing goes for fast-food chains having staff allocated to making my burger and fries instead of working the registers.

Automated tills are terrible because there's no way to handle edge cases. I can't sub a milkshake instead of a pop, for instance.

Even McD's is bringing back cashiers. Walmart has a fuckton of staff just monitoring the tills, because of the rampant theft.

Is there a reason he can't start at 9? And by reason, I mean legitimate operational reasons he can't? If you can't pay more, might be a reasonable solution.
I'm sure Arcticcat will chime in, but seeing its a construction labour position, yes, there is a reason you can't start at 9. I believe his sector of construction is seasonal. Basically, you need to pile in a years worth of total hours and work in 7 months, if you're lucky. So for that particular position, you need to start super early and work late daily. It is a requirement of being a labour in seasonal construction, and they are compensated for it. Seasonal usually pays more per hour and the overtime is considered a perk.

Automated tills that can scan your entire cart without removing items is the ultimate solution. In Costco for example, cashiers and checkout belts is a gigantic waste of time. I'd rather see more staff handing out free samples.

I'm seeing lots of employee poaching going on right now.

People jumping ship for flexible hours/flexible work locations and significant pay raises. Bosses are pissed, but can you really blame someone jumping for a 10%, 15%, 20% raise... like what do you expect?

Yupp. Wife just quit O&G after ~6 years for 10% raise and fully remote. Couldn't have worked out better.

    That's a third party company.

Yep. I jumped ship for more money, better benefits, and full time WFH. I was poached as well, wasn't even looking at the time. Tech is a hell of a sector to be in right now.

I mean if you're not getting a 10% bump you're basically taking a pay cut.

    Like most people have!

Pet peeve: People not understanding inflation and the impact to their finances and not saying a word v.s a 3% wage roll back and everyone loses their minds.

    (I'm looking at you nurses)
