Start parking it with the keys in it and unlocked.
This is actually a great idea, all you pay is the deductible

Well, turns out it’s pretty sick. Some coolant pipe system is leaking in the engine valley that requires considerable labor to repair. And the valve stems are leaking causing the oil consumption and smoke. Again, big labor to fix. Estimate came in around $12k for all the fixes and some ‘while we’re at it’ stuff. Not surprisingly, uncle is seriously considering getting all this done. His frame of thinking says if it lasts another 14 years he’ll be 85 and won’t give a shit/be dead anyway and he won’t have to spend $xxxxx on a new vehicle right now.

    Thanks for the recommendations everyone.

$12k every couple years for 14 years buys a pretty nice car.

    Yeah. This is retarded.
He could've bought Twin Cam's diesel for a shade more than this singular repair will cost and had the "increased reliability" of a diesel until he's ready to be buried.
Stop the madness. Tear this bandaid off! There are far more enjoyable, unreliable nightmares than this vehicle. He's old - get some dumb British thing like a TR7 or an MG (unless he's a Kraut).
This vehicle needs a Shoot, Shovel & Shut Up.

So, the X5 got driven down to Bellevue Washington to get all it’s repairs done. Engine, suspension, leaks, panoramic sunroof, all of it that was needed fixed. Cost him little over $13,000 Canadian. Uncle is happy to have wasted so much on an aging BMW instead of ditching it for something newer.

Can't wait till he falters at the border and pays duty and fines on this work.

But the dollar was so strong, it practically pays for itself.
