    Default Pay structures

How are you paid? Commission? Salary? Other?
Do you like or dislike how you are paid?

I went through a job change recently. My new job has a different pay structure and got me thinking about how pay structures change your work place culture and satisfaction in your career.

The way automotive technicians are paid in my new job greatly influences their attitude, how they interact with others, and sometimes work quality, mostly not for the positive. It rewards quantity over quality, discourages learning and advancement and encourages short cuts. I went from being paid based off of my attendance to being paid based off my billed hours. I dislike it, but the schedule outweighs my dislike for the pay system.

I have purposely avoided the flat rate pay system. The automotive industry is bent on attaching productivity to your pay. Doing quality work and gaining understanding is more important to me than billed hours. Over the last few years I have been retooling and re-educating myself to move into another industry that focuses on quality. How has your desire to be paid shaped your career?

Salary plus a per unit commission. Prior 6 years at the same job I was hourly contractor.

Currently contract for a company that can’t do any work because of IT incompetence. So I guess I’m currently an unpaid wfh intern for 2-4 weeks.

I currently get paid a salary, plus a percentage of the final discounted job ticket. It's a fucking dumb way of getting paid and I don't know how long I'm going to put up with it. We had a job a while ago and the field ticket came out to $16,000. Nice enough for a day's work. The trouble is that the ticket got discounted in town to $6000, so now instead of making a dollar, I make 37 cents.

The even sweeter part of the deal is that no one tells us what the final ticket is, and jobs done this month are paid at the end of next month. So I can do that $16,000 job on July 1, have it discounted in town to $6000, no one will tell me they've done it, and I won't know it until I see my paycheck on August 31. I don't know how anyone can live like that. The advice I get from the people I work with is "just don't think about it."

That's pretty silly. It should be more transparent.

If you are busy it might work, but yeah tha5s grossly nontransparent.

Salary plus commission right now. The commission is a joke, for a few reasons.

0.5% of profit made, from multiple sources. No exclusivity allowed. Or something like that.

I like money, and I want to make a lot of it. I work harder than most people and chase opportunities to get promotions/raises. Working out so far.

I won't go into a lot of detail about how it's shaped my career, but the major move I made was leaving the EPC industry since the comp was garbage (and it was shit work) into a different career that has significantly better comp/upward potential, and significantly more workload and stress.

Just plain old boring hourly wage + holiday pay on every pacheque.

I used to be salary with overtime pay and vacation accrued, but those days are long gone for me I think.

Salary + bonuses, works for me, I'd personally hate to work hourly as I hate time tracking.

Well imagine if instead of writing that letter to the editor, she just posts on a car forum for car enthusiasts. That's Kritafo.

100% Commission but a yearly salary draw, same pay cheque every two weeks until you break your draw in commission, then you still get your regular pay cheque every two weeks but get the additional commission.

Resets every calendar year. I like it, you can focus on selling and not be desperate to have to make a sale to pay for grocery's each month.
