Totally depends on altitude. If you can get past most of the atmosphere, technically any speed is possible if you slowly add thrust on each revolution around the earth.

X43 seemed to only be 43,000 feet. If you want to go hypersonic, thats actually kind of a low altitude. Maintaining hypersonic at sea level is arguably next to impossible, unless of course its falling to the ground. I think someone calculated the speed of a heavily orbit decayed block of metal dropped from a satellite. It could technically hit hypersonic without any rocket attached to it at all.

I fully blame the USA obsession with flash and bang. Technically a well made hypersonic vehicle will have extremely short bursts of fuel (maybe as little as 15 minutes) on every orbit. USA has always been, burn as much as you can in the first five minutes in the biggest ball of glory you can have without it exploding spectacularily.

China might have also used an assisted railgun launch, no or little fuel to launch. With no human pilot or fragile satellite payload, you can easily do a 200G railgun launch.

USA loves the combustion engine, lots of flash and bang. Even though technically 1/3rd electrical horsepower on two cents of electricity is enough to propel a human being at 15.5 mph for 10 miles.

After reading some detail of what's tested, this won't be an ICBM against land masses. But it can definitely put the US carrier fleets and US Asian allies on notice, especially if they can refine the targeting.

Chinese Navy/Air Force can't do shit (heck, they can't even fly in the rain) but it doesn't have to if they can detonate a couple of nukes with in 25mi of the fleet with 0 countermeasures.

Not sure if it will comes to this, but basically with what's going on with Taiwan lately it's definitely a flex.

Also PLA can now sources all the processor they need via Alibaba and their Yitian 710. Sure it's for "cloud services". And given Alibaba is a wall street darling unlike Huawei, a ban will less likely to happen. They can buy all the procs they want from TSMC.

That the USA is so xenophobic about digital data might actually work out to be in Chinas favor.

USA thinks it has secrets of higher value (like 2,000 different patents on the combustion engine, which is also why its so expensive) but no doubt China also has a few. 70-Qubit computer AND hypersonic vehicles.

USA really has to up its IP theft gain, or its going to be left behind. Where would the USA be today if they didn't steal the formula for weapons based on gunpowder?

It is worth noting that they missed their target by 24 miles. Very few nukes will be able to compensate for a miss of that distance.
