Still only 7lbs and 14.5°. All plugs looked good, with #8 being the "worst". It is the most carboned / sooty looking and even then, still not terrible

At a loss really, not really sure what else I can check before yanking the motor. Going to re test the injectors just to be safe and cross that off the list.

    Open for suggestions haha.

Plans to yank, hopefully find the culprit, fix, button back up and then turn it up.

Why not just pull the heads with it in?

A leakdown test should also show a headgasket. I cant see how you went from good rings to bad rings, that would be the last thing Id check imo. But a leakdown will also help with ring diagnosis.

I'm not sure either but fluids are all good and the crankcase pressure has to be coming from somewhere. There has to be a cause.

+1 for Leakdown Test. I’ve blown up a lot of engines in the past, leakdown test is your friend.

Cylinder 7 & 5, broken pistons, some debris in the oil pickup..

Just my luck, digging in more tomorrow to see if anything else shows up.

Not enough ring gap? 7psi and 14 degrees is pretty tame.

    Ranged from .019 - .021 top and bottom .025

I'll be the first to say, I don't have the experience with this as it is my first ls turbo set up but I'm leaning towards tight

Either way, based off boost and timing, still shouldn't of been an issue.

Yeah definitely too tight.. would have wanted more in the .025 range for the top.

What part of the pistons broke? In my experience, the two types of ring land failures are pretty distinct. End gap too tight (especially on the top ring) will lift the top land off.

Detonation will crack the ones further down and the crown will be OK or just show pitting signs of det.

Either way, your margin for error is a lot smaller with cast pistons.

What do the piston tops look like? The failure looks like a detonation one and not a ring gap one, and even though boost and timing were mild, could be something as stupid as bad gas.

I would have guessed detonation from that failure as well.

This is the detonation pitting you might see, but like I said cast pistons are so fragile sometimes they just bust lands without pitting on the crown. Check combustion chambers too, they will also pit if the det is bad enough.

I should be able to get my hands on some more detailed photos tomorrow. Motor is also at a buddies shop being torn down. As I mentioned before, little out of my depth of experience and I'm out of town for work but I wanted this still moving forward.

Tops of pistons apparently didn't have any signs of detonation, nor did the plugs.

I'm glad you're happy there's car talk going on at my expense

Motors torn down and more findings..

"Rod bearings look good & same with the rod throws on the crank.

The crank bearings are done and so are the surfaces on the crank.

So you need 2 pistons and your choice of a different crank or get this one ground. I would rebearing the whole engine and I would strongly consider replacing all the pistons."

I don't have many more pics but that doesn't really matter..

Downtime seems like it's going to be short as replacement parts are being sourced and moving forward getting it back together.

Hopefully I don't have the same experience shortly after its back together haha.

This is where I'll say you should just source a junkyard 5.3, aluminum or otherwise. Bolt your stuff on and go.

But that's just my opinion. I just hope you don't suffer further problems and this isn't costing you an arm and a leg!

Well considering I was hoping for just regular maintenance for a while, it's going to cost me more than I'd like.

Just want to get it back together and enjoy it for the rest of whatever we have left of the season.

Have about 40kms on it now, going to change the oil tomorrow and then get some more driving in. Everything seems to be good again.. Fingers crossed.
