I agree, but isn't it like a 99% chance of being a junkie taking it for a joyride and an evening full of fun activities (drugs, sex, etc., etc.,)?This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote

But I don’t think the junkies are tagging the cars with GPS beacons and reprogramming the cars in peoples driveways to make off with them.
Not having your car stolen by junkies is more in the “don’t leave your keys in the unlocked car” level of preparation haha
Sounds like there is a new generation of wideband encrypted keyless entry, more tied to your cell phone, that will make this sort of thing obsolete in a few years.

I thought the original warning is set at 3 days. So in theory, you can track non-iphone owners for 3 days without a single beep. Since most cars are parked at night, they can come for it that very night if the car owner isn't using iPhone. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
The key is now they can shop for the cars at the malls instead of driving around trying to find them. I would bet they would mostly target big Toyota with hitches or trucks/suvs that are too big for most garages. Those has a huge market in Africa and ME.
EDIT: Looks like it's updated to 24hrs and it start beeping. But it's still enough time to track that car down and snatch it.

The speakers on the Air tags are really quiet so even if the cars were parked in the garage nobody is going to hear it. On the street, zero chance of owner hearing it.This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote

Notably the tracking only really works if you come near an apple product as well.
Seems like a super overblown story by typical media who don’t know what they are talking about.

I thought you don't need to be near it? All it takes is a random iphone drive by and it will upload the tag's location? This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
And if you park your car outside, there is plenty of range for random drive by to pick it up?
The main ability to track is by going off nearby iPhones. I doubt someone’s phone in a fast moving metal car 20-30 feet away is going to result in a reliable location fix.
It’s a tiny little chip with a tiny low power antenna. People expect too much of these things.

Sounds like 30kph residential speed works for airtags.

That and it’s super easy to disable. I mean if these pro car thieves are going to use cloning gear to steal your car by actually tagging them with air tags, I’m sure they’ll kill the speaker. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
Still seems far fetched to me.

I was gonna say, no "regular" thief is going to spend $30 on an airtag let alone the receiver amplifier gear and/or reprogramming software, lol
