Default Calgary December 2021 - Uber Vs Cabs

Had a buddy of mine say he had completely gone away from Uber and only used taxis now because the surge pricing was costing him a fortune. I hardly go anywhere, so figured I'd ask you smart folks, what's your preferred method of getting around to (and more importantly from) Christmas events? I love the Uber App, but last time the wait was pretty lengthy.

    Discuss.

Uber has been more expensive nearly every time I’ve used it recently. Not worth the cost savings anymore however I’d still rather use it because I had the experience of riding in a cab. Nearly all of them smell and aren’t very comfy. But when it’s last call and there’s huge surge pricing and a long wait, we’ll just flag down a cab and take one home to save time.

Last time I tried to get an uber they stopped like 40 feet from me on an empty block then canceled the ride the second he came to a stop. I ran up to him and asked WTF and he said "you weren't waiting for me so fuck off. This all took place in the span of under 15 seconds and he clearly saw me when he drove by. It was minus 25 outside and I was trying to get across downtown so I think he just accepted the fare without looking at the destination then cancelled it when he saw it was only a short ride.

That being said, if I am leaking an event where I don't think we will hit any traffic I will get a cab. If I think there may be some delays I use an uber because they are flat pricing.

I hardly use either, but am still not over the decades of 100% piss poor taxi service I endured. I'm also 90% sure the only reason we dug a very expensive tunnel under the new runway was because of these assholes. So I still use uber, even when it's more expensive.

    Fuck taxis.

I used to think ubers were better quality vehicles, but now it is just cabbies diving around in bagged out corollas. fuck them and their surge pricing. If a cab company came out with a similiar app I would be all over it.

Any time after a flames game or thurs/fri/sat night uber rates are ridic so ill track a cab down.

Agree with most, ubers are never cheaper than cabs now, but it is nice to be able to wake up, hit the app, have a car there in 5 minutes vs trying to get a cab to the airport for flights. Always uber to the airport

It's almost like a heavily regulated industry sets the price floor. I mean who knew.

Have you used a cab company app recently?

Maybe not as good as Uber, but does the trick.

Most people in Red Deer are still satisfied with Uber over a Taxi. But getting an Uber in Red Deer, even on a Friday or Saturday night is like hitting the lottery. Always "NO CARS AVAILABLE".

Example, right now, just checked. No cars available.

90% of the people that come thru my car always say how difficult it is to get one or having to wait over an hour. I tell them why it's like that: City of RD fucked it. Regulated it and almost all drivers walked away. Tho I think with time, more drivers will come on.

I got black listed from enough taxis that the problem sorted itself out.
When you take 45+ min to get here, it turns out that I phoned another taxi who got here in 6 minutes and collected the fare.

They have apps. They work ok. I use the checker cab one when uber has surge pricing to compare the cost.

With the Checker app, do you pay online and get a digital receipt? For expenses I go Uber every time because of the ease of payment. I've probably been scarred from so many years of "sorry the machine isn't working, I take cash" that I haven't taken a regular cab in years.

Used to enjoy that one. Easy enough for thier dispatch to take credit card by phone, I'd always enjoy that conversation.

All this taxi talk, I've decided to try one again tonight after several years without. Let's see if this guy fucks it up enough for me to stick with surge pricing Uber.

Ubers price surging is scummy as fuck, i checked the price for a cab into downtown but didnt prebook as the wife wasnt 100% sure when she'd be home from work

When i checked the journey to book, the price had jumped by $25

Got out my work phone and checked, price was back down to what i got originally

Both a necessary evil for me, i check the price and availability on both and book the closest first and price second

The people driving Uber are no better or worse than the people driving taxi's. The cars are mostly the same here in Cowtown.
The benefit used to be the app and shorter wait times. I will investigate the taxi apps some day and compare.

To me the key difference is when you call for an Uber at a busy place/street, the Uber driver isn't going to pick someone else up instead of you. I've had that happen numerous times with taxis, even when using one of their apps. Cabbies don't GAF who gets in their car, a fare is a fare.

I went to take an Uber last weekend to my work christmas party, first time I looked up the trip it was $31. Looked a second time twenty minutes later it was $42. Called a checker cab, when the cab showed up Uber was $33 dollars. The cab ended up being $38 dollars.
