Lets not let that stop us from doing it every time the forecast calls for 50+mm of rain though. We are in a climate emergency after all.

I like extraslows idea of just walling off Sunnyside altogether. No vehicles allowed 365 days a year.

They're certainly big, but I don't know if they are the BEST I've tasted.

    Stop the hate.
It's not like they had several other, real-time trending water buildup data to predict and judge their risks.
The time for action is now.

They really ought to lower speed limits to 30kph city wide. The risk is too great.

I wonder why the City/CEMA ordered a dirt berm built when there are pallets and pallets of re-usable flood abatement dams in COC warehouses and are all owned by Water Services?

It's a show of force to intimidate the river.

River was at a 5 year flow, raised 0.4 metres, well within the current Sunnyside Berm which provides 1:20 year flood protection. The early projects were that the River would hit 1:20 year levels which would overtop that berm. I don't know what they built that too, but the bigger problem wasn't the height it's that it wasn't keyed into anything, it was built on top of asphalt, I don't think it would have held water for too long. In any case this was still a large over reaction, the 2013 flood saw 300mm of rain over a day. This was supposed to be 120mm over two days.

Also, I know you understand how to measure risk, it's about the probability and the consequence. The consequence of the berm being breached on Memorial is pretty substantial, so a few hundred thousand is probably better.

Worst part is I think they are going to leave the Memorial Gondike up into next week cause it will keep raining, that's just sensationalism and I am betting they will use it as an excuse to close Memorial Drive for the summer for pedestrians....

Very curious what area of the city Gondek resides.
If this was a decision to protect "her" area at the cost of tax payer dollars that would be perfect.

Country Hills area I believe was her riding. This isn't about it being her location, the residents of Sunnyside are very politically active and they make a lot of noise about it. The City is going to probably spend half a billion dollars to prevent Sunnyside from ever flooding again. It's actually quite intense.

My personal opinion is that the neighbourhood is in a flood plain. Level it, put in a stormwater pond and turn it into a massive park connected to both Prince's Island and Eau Claire. That would actually help with flooding on the upper levels of the NW inner City, improve water quality, increase habitat and produce a huge amount of usable parkland for the community.

Sunnyside used to chronically flood historically. It was simply accepted.

Yep. Grandpa would tell me stories about it.
Also ice dams under the center st bridge would flood Chinatown a bit too.

Wrong. Flooding is a purely 21st century CLIMATE EMERGENCY side effect.

    You must hate science.

You forgot the part about locking the residents in their basement during the next flood to ensure they don’t infest other areas
