It looks dry, but is not. The mazda and honda drivers found out.
I was driving back from Banff Sunday morning and this was the exact case, highway looked dry but was insanely slippery. Most people adjusted to conditions, a few left lane hero's found out the hard way and whimpered over to the right lane eventually.

Weird. Deerfoot was fine when I drove on it at 7am. Left lane was dry as a bone. Did it snow again after that?
I was on it around 7.15/20. The Mazda crash just must have happened as I got to it. The fire truck after the Calf Robe was leaving as I passed it.
Some parts of Deerfoot were slick. But mostly dry.

Not sure what time you did that drive but it was very visually icy, you could tell the normal driving line was compacted ice due to the snow blowing across the road and vehicles compacting it. Someone in a grey Corolla a few vehicles in front of me spun near highway 40 overpass, I had already halved my speed before the vehicle directly in front of me had hit the brakes, not sure how people can be that slow to react.

PA5s we’re fine today here. Haven’t ventured out of Arbour Lake yet tho. My big test is the stop at the bottom of the hill. Non stop crashes for the all season crew.

99% of peoples eyes are just locked in on the bumper in front of them, they don't look ahead

I would argue that we are starting to get cold enough overnight that softer compound snow/winter tires are actually helpful versus already stiff perf winters

Not really a stud day though.

Maybe if I had to park outside haha. Seriously tho, I don’t think performance winters are that much stiffer compound than true winters. There are very few days where I’ve experienced grip dropping off a cliff with perf winters, and that’s like -40C weather.

Yeah isn't the difference in stiffer sidewall and different tread block design? I assumed the compound was the one thing that had to be similar.

Days below -15 I notice the hard compound affecting grip with my all-seasons. For sure.
Its weird, I'm a big belivier in the benefit of winter tires, but I don't have them on my daily driver.

    I'm also a firm believer, but I'm running all-weathers.

I thought the question wasn't whether another tire was """good enough""" but that studs were an advantage. Again, I say street race circuit to settle it.

I was doing this exercise and defined my criteria as follows:

I'm comparing 2 cars really. Sienna with Hakka 13s or whatever last years were, and E53 with Michelin PA5's which are the bottom end of performance for actual winter use. So yea, the van needs to beat the convertible considerably to count as a day.
I’m looking for a big enough gap where the slow minivan beats the e53 driving like an ass.

The stretch of Deerfoot N between I think Blackfoot and Memorial was fUcKeD. I think 4 accidents around 09:00? One was live, directly in front of me.

I should finally install that dash cam I bought on Boxing Day '19 LoL!

Legit shit show here yesterday evening on the drive home. Took me 1.5hrs to get home (usually 20 mins). As temps dropped everything turned to ice. Multi car pile ups on most down hill sections. Alex Fraser bridge was closed due to a bus and something else spinning out. This trapped people on the bridge. They had to spend the night there. People arrived home after that chaos this morning after 6am LOL. Transit shut down, people got stuck in bus stations over night as well.

It's BC, they expect the gov't to open their car doors and tell them which way their house is.
