Lost a tree yesterday. We planted 10 aspens when we built our house 5 years ago, and commented day before yesterday how great they looked, and must be enjoying all the rain.

Well, found one of them lying on the ground yesterday, with the dirt base completely liquified. There are a couple roots still attached, so I righted it and am keeping it in place with rope, hoping it will repair itself but I'm less than confident. Bummer.

We had a swede fall at my parents house a few years back, I thought it was dead too. We put one of those root grower sticks in the exposed root ball and put it back in place. It didn't look good for the rest of the year and wasn't until next year and it was back to normal.

I think when they are young, they are more resilient and repairs grow quicker. I'm keeping my fingers crossed, as I have no interest in replanting a mature tree. Good suggestion on the root stick; I should probably drive a deep, heavy stake as well for added support. I can't imagine it rocking back and forth is going to promote its recovery.

Yep. I used the Miracle grow "fertilizer spike" like this one:

But I'm pretty sure the one I got was a specifically for tree roots. I would think anything with high P and K would be good for this.

Anyone's who has to replant a rootball, whether it's a new to you tree, or fixing one like above, I recommend mycorrizal fungi. It seems to help quite a bit.

I'm still trying to figure out exactly what this berm is supposed to be preventing? The way it's angled, wouldn't it keep more water IN Sunnyside since the river runs west to east? Can a Hydrological Engineer explain this to me?

I think the river banks to the west of there are higher. Relatively speaking.

Prevents it from flooding downstream then coming back on the road.

It's all pretty flat on the north side of the curling club and the city parking lot though.

My guess is the berm protects a critical meter of height.

Anything more than that and we have bigger problems.

I don’t criticize the design of the berm so much as what idiot thought it was nessecary.
