Hearing rumblings of water almost breaching memorial Dr in some areas.
    City pumps on location.
They are building a berm apparently, hence the closure.

Casual watch of morning news and water seems to be pretty high but nothing we don't see every year or so.

The water is always high this time of year

Why even argue. The data is readily available.

This is the height meter downstream of the zoo. The data is real time. Google “real-time hydrometric data map search”

If this city can't handle 2-3 days of moderate rain, we have big problems. Given what happened in 2013, we should have an infrastructure capable of handling everything but the very wildest storm. I mean, is a decade not enough time to put the proper protection in place?

You think a major infrastructure project can be built in Canada in under a decade?

    That’s cute.

I think they only STARTED on the elbowed mitigation damn earlier this year no?

After all the back and forth, Springbank res finally broke ground last month. Almost 10 years after the flood and won't be operational until 2025. So probably 2027.

Glenmore should be able to deal with that since they started to empty it yesterday?

The city is handling everything just fine, but the extended forecast says the rain may continue so they’re being wise to manage the water as best they can. That means keeping the rivers flowing near their max to keep the reservoirs and upstream dam low. If the river actually overflows they’ll cut back flow but in the meantime the best practice is to get rid of as much water as you safely can.

Flows on the bow at Calgary have not increased significantly. Levels like 10cm above "normal" for spring.

Typically no, but the last flood cost us 5 billion and that isn't something we can afford to have happen again. It should have been at the very top of the infrastructure project list, and I'm sure the studies and potential solutions were already discussed long ago.

It would, if I knew what "Kerts" were. Even a quick Google search was useless.

The main mitigations measures that protect Calgary are the reservoirs that already exist and the upgrades at Glenmore. Those defenses have massive capacity and that capacity has not even begin to be utilized.
Glenmore and ghost have NOT started holding back water. In fact Glenmore is lower than a week ago.

Supposed to go to 800 m3/s by thursday.. it'll get bigger. Honestly, i just hope they remember to close the gates, last year we struggled with low water all season since they ran the gates as flood mitigation w/ zero flooding..

    .
Springbank dam was so contested because the spring bank option doesnt have a very large storage capacity and doesnt provide a solution to bragg creek. The Mclean creek option made more sense in my mind (and apparently a lot of others as well) which is why the springbank dam took so long to initiate.

But then how are they supposed to tell us there's a drought?

@suntan is reporting the same m3/s on his home sensor. But the trendline is flat on his chart.

This comment is too obtuse for my brain.
