From what I have seen it is reported that Merc had extensive discussion with FIA about the design direction they went with.
Whether it was only related to Side pods or whether that included the mirror we will find out in a weeks time.

Mercedes hasn't said anything other than FIA cleared it weeks ago. Everyone takes advantage of mounting hardware to aero shape them as much as possible, although Ferrari's halo mounted wing mirrors were banned. Not sure if they can ban what Merc has since it's technically part of the crash structure.

As long as they are clear on the rules, it doesn't matter to me. But those are clearly wings.

Yea, when the side impact structures aren't enclosed within the sidepods, they're going to have to look like wings. Look at Formula E cars, they all have the exposed structures because of lower cooling requirements for an EV, and you have to make it aerodynamically efficient so it looks like a wing, unless rules stipulate you have a huge block hanging in the air. Same goes for mandated camera mounts, they all look like wings.

The question is, how much aerodynamic influence can you have on it? It looks like Mercedes is using that area to clean up the wash from the front of the car. How will that interpret for teams that have it enclosed within side pods, you could argue that the whole sidepod is an aerodynamic device for the crash structure because it's accomplishing the same thing (but with a bigger drag penalty).

Definitely a very interesting grey area.

I'm super interested in F1 this year...but I also don't think Mercedes will run away with it. If one team is blowing up a sport and it's not competitive, it's not as interesting as a competition. I'm just not as interested in cars, that's not exactly a trend.

I’ve been watching practice it’s been quite interesting the Mercedes’ doesn’t look that good but they are probably playing around with setup. Going to be so exciting, I still think 1 team will dominate the year.
