If that's the case, it's the biggest loophole yet. Why wouldn't a backmarker team just completely blow out the budget on car development and take a penalty on their already shitty results so that they're competitive in future years?
I thought the key was there are two levels of the breach and this was just a fine so it wasn't an as big of a deal.

You can't completely blow the budget. They blew it a bit.

I think the real question is what did Aston Martin use their overspend on. Their car sucks

I'll assume there's a 'minor' and 'major' breach

Aston didn't overspend. They simply incorrectly submitted their financial numbers and then corrected them and they were under budget. They received a penalty for not following procedure, not for going over budget.

If nothing about this weekend goes well, I at least liked Dani Ric's helmet.

    Observations so far this weekend:

The time difference sucks for Europeans
Alex Palou looked great in FP1
Giovanazzi is unlikely to get that Haas seat unless Ferrari really has some influence to exert.
Verstappen likely exceeded track limits on his only hot lap in Q1 but they didn't delete the lap time while they did delete Zhou's lap. Miss by FIA or just a misleading camera angle...?

Wonder how much of a difference Checo's wing end plate was making? You would think they would've tossed a new front on at his pit stop.

Thanks, I saw that but forgot to update this post after.

What a crazy race that was. Felt bad for Carlos and Stroll. They both made slight errors but they shouldn't have been so severe as to take them out of the race without a huge dose of bad luck.

Seems the FIA feckin' hates Gasly. 2 penalty points for that gap while behind the safety car? Brutal.

Alonso is lucky to have not only driven away from that, but walked away from it. Great race for him, other than the penalty after the race.

Max on a whole different planet again. Clean racing between lewis and charles and max was nice.

Alonso popping a wheelie was pretty nuts.

    Max is scary.

Great race from beginning to end, very enjoyable.

The last 10 laps were pretty exciting. I like Lewis as a driver... not as much as an activist but even I was pulling for him to get his first W, but after lap 50-51 it was clear he didn't stand a chance and Max was gonna get him.

Would be so interesting to see someone like Max in a mid field car.. see how he could perform.

Thats my new idea for F1 - Car roulette for one race per year. I wonder how many crashes there would be

BREAKING: Red Bull gets $7m fine and 10% reduction in car development time for budget cap breach. Breach was £1,864,000 ($2.2m) or 1.6%, but FIA acknowledged if a tax credit had been correctly applied would have been £432,652 ($0.5m), or 0.37%
Seems reasonable fine. The $ is irrelevant but the 10% reduction in wind tunnel time is a significant penalty for a 400k overspend after the tax credit. Given RB's lead in aero efficiency they'll probably be in good shape next year but it'll be interesting to see if Merc/Ferrari can capitalize on this to close the gap over the next season. If affects the 12 months from the acceptance of the penalty so guessing it'll mostly hurt their mid-season developments next year. Though if they have any spare wind tunnel time now perhaps they write some of that off since they're so far ahead already.

FIA is so fucked up with penalties and shit. I want Masi back.

Got fucked by the guy in front for accelerating too fast during safety car - 5 second penalty.

    WTF?!

Current penalties - mildly impact race, mostly schlubs who aren't competing for dick all anyways
Masi - Completely changed driver champion for 2021

The rules might have some gaps, but at least enforcing them fairly and evenly across the board should be a high focus. But you got Magnussen eating a fat penalty for a wing endplate safety issue, and then Perez gets to drive around with the same issue and no problem. Even after Haas filed a complaint about the double standard. Or Alonso dodging the same penalty for that mirror coming off(which seems like a way worse potential safety problem than a wing endplate).

FIA just has a big hard on for Haas?

The Perez and Kmag situations were different. KMag drove around 4 of 5 laps with it flapping around so they flagged it. Perez got damage lap 1 but until lap 5 the end plate was still solid then it started flapping. And in just over a lap it broke off. If Kmags had broken off sooner or Perez’s stayed on longer then their situations would’ve been reversed.
