Used to be able to pay your $5 fine to the state trooper at the roadside in Montana.

You have no rights in Canada, as per section 1 of the charter

I remember a long time ago having to pay a speeding ticket on the road in Montana or they'd take us to jail.

I figured he just pocketed the money at that time..

I mean, it'll still carry hefty demerits. And depending on circumstances you can still add a mandatory court appearance required charge if it meets that public safety threshold. Really any 50 over does but this just makes things easier I guess for everybody. Sort of. I'm not too sure what to think of it yet. I think its a plus in court reduction times, but shit for anybody getting a ticket.
Court reduction times are not a plus for anybody except the provincial government.

The problem I have is if you've been given a ticket in error, you still have to pay it even if you are found innocent.
The real problem is that it isn't going to be an "error". This is going to lead to straight up corruption by the police. Police already routinely throw unjustified charges at people just for the sake of creating a problem for them, and working under the assumption that at least a few of the charges will stick. Now they are eliminating a way to fight your case when you've been wrongly charged. They can legitimately pull you over doing 10 UNDER the speed limit, and just hand you a ticket for 30 OVER the limit. Try and explain that to the adjudicator who is just going to say "Fuck you, guilty"

You all are looking at this wrong (although the mandatory fee to appeal is total BS unless you are refunded upon reversal).
I foresee that by eliminating the need for officers to make a court appearance that they go on a ticket writing binge and actually start enforcing traffic laws like illegal lane changes and rolling stops and tailgating.
HAHAHA. That's a nice little dream you conjured up.

So I assume this would basically necessitate a dashcam and some way to prove your speed? And at that point you're at the mercy of an adjudicator?

With your mandatory fees you are out money 100% of the time with no recourse, traffic cops are nothing more than thugs and now they have even more free reign. Fuck em all.

is it actually something they agree on? I hate this new policy to the point Id vote differently.
Just to add to this, NDP took some heat for wanting to implement this, which was introduced previously by the PCs.

So ya, it was pushed across 3 governments.

The chief said that during the call, Madu, who is Black, expressed concern about people of colour being stopped by police and, separately, political tension with the Lethbridge Police Service.
Guy says it was a DWB even though he was on his phone lol

Alberta is delaying proposed changes to how traffic violations will be dealt with in the provincial court system.

Glad to hear there was enough backlash for them to at least delay it. Hopefully they make some changes before actually implementing it.

Was there a Nanos poll that sampled 1500 random people over land phones lines?

Yeah this was a stupid change from the beginning.

edit. turns out we don't care when drunk drivers lose their rights to a fair trial, but once it happens for relatively meaningless traffic tickets everyone suddenly cares.

I mean, the amount we should care probably should be higher when it's a larger group accused of minor crimes than a smaller one accused of major crimes, right?
This makes sense to me, unless I missed the point of your post.

beyond is a fairly specific group of people.

Statistically, the average joe/karen will support this change.

It is the standard playbook for a government to take away citizen's rights. Start with the least possible group of people I.e. drunk drivers and pedophiles etc. Then slowly crank the temperature on the water while the frogs boil.

"Minister Rajan Sawhney is now recommending the plan be scrapped, because it's not as effective or popular as the government hoped."

How did they ever expect this to be "popular"?
