    Default 2019 CX3 Battery issue

The battery on my CX3 goes dead unless I start it or drive it just about everyday. This is what I was told by my Mazda dealer. This seems to happen mostly in the winter.

Obviously with COVID and considering I am now retired, I am not driving everyday like I used to. I keep it plugged in when the temp drops. It seems crazy to have to start/drive your car everyday! I was told that this is tends to happen with highly computerized vehicles. That doesn't seem reasonable because most relatively new models cars these days are highly computerized. I have a brand new Mazda battery.

    So my questions are:
    1) does this happen to your late model vehicle?
    2) what less obvious car component could be draining the battery?
3What similar small SUV does not seem to have this issue?

If your retired and not driving it much, I suggest a trickle charger.

With how cold its been, and if your not driving your car regularily and letting the alternator do its thing, your battery will fail pretty quick. I can't even recall how many batteries we've sold this past 2 weeks for frozen vehicles not starting.

On my Infiniti, I have a battery saver option where if it senses the battery dropping below the recommended voltage, it kills all power to stop draining the battery further.

    Several things here.
    1) a healthy car with healthy battery DOES NOT need to be driven daily.
    2) many modern vehicles DO have parasitic draws that can run down a battery.
    3) a battery maintainer is a good idea for most vehicles.
    4) you dealership does not have your best interests at heart. Disregard thier advice.
    5) a new battery may help, if you don't have other issues. You may have other issues.

-A good battery, you can get it tested at any auto shop.
-Lock/arm the vehicle after use to minimize parasitic draw.
-Plug it into a smart trickle charger daily.

Going into 9th year with the original OEM-issued battery.

    Thanks for the responses.
I replaced the battery last February, because it was doing the same thing so I don't believe this is a problem with the battery, and yeah not driving the car for a few days should not result in a dead battery.
The car is kept plugged in and my husband's car never fails to start.
We have a portable charger but what is a trickle charger? Is there any way to fix these "parasitic draws"?
Regardless I will clearly have to start my car everyday and let it run for a while

Running the car for a few minutes a day is a terrible idea. Get a battery tender or maintainer or any smart charger and just leave it connected. The cheapest Noco will work for you.

Finding and fixing parasitic draws is difficult. And you should still get your battery tested.

Starting your car does more harm than good.
There are plenty of good Youtube videos on parastic draws you can learn from.

You have a few options depending on how much you drive..

    1) Disconnect battery when not in use
    2) Install master disconnect to shut off power draw
    3) Install maintainer

I would start by getting the battery checked. My truck sat for 2 weeks without being started when we were in the deepfreeze, and it fired up no problem, without being plugged in.

Its the size of the battery in these sub-compact cars. HRV has the same issue. The only solution is to battery tinder it or get a bigger battery?

My 2020 CX-5 goes days without being run at -25C since I am WFH and never really go anywhere. Plug it in for 2-3 hours and it fires up no problem every time. There was a recall on CX-5 and CX-9 for a relay in the powered rear liftgate that I had fixed on mine. It was at the root of a bunch of battery drain issues on these models. Maybe check to see if it impacts the CX-3s as well?

OP: The battery you replaced it with last February. I'm assuming it was replaced under warranty so it should be an OEM one correct?

It should still be under factory warranty being a 2019. Let the dealership figure out the parasitic draw.

The 12V battery in your vehicle should last for about 5 years or more. Seeing that you replaced it last year and it is dead again, something is killing it. Every vehicle will have a battery draw. Things like clocks, module memory, and telematics (your vehicle will check in with the manufacture every few hours) will consume power. For a 2018 CX3 the spec for this draw is 40-65mA, manufactures will size the battery so that the vehicle will be able to start after a minimum of 14 days.
Finding parasitic draws is generally not a do-it-yourself type job. Back in yesteryear it could have been a glove box light stuck on but on modern-day cars, it is usually something keeping a communication network awake or a module that has failed and is drawing excessive power. You will have to have the tooling and knowledge to monitor traffic on a network and have a solid understanding of electricity to apply ohm's law to the values that you measure. The days of pulling fuses until the draw disappears are over.
I would not recommend taking this problem to a dealership. The way they pay their technicians does not foster diagnostic ability, you may get lucky and get a good technician but they may also waste a lot of your money. I recommend taking it to a shop in Airdrie called "My garage".

Would this CX-3, by chance, happen to have an aftermarket (non-Mazda) remote car starter on it? I've seen these kill batteries overnight on countless Japanese and Korean cars over the years. If it does, that would be the first thing I'd look at if it has an unacceptably large parasitic draw.

Does you CX-3 has any sort of call home ability via cell network (probably not since CX-3 platform is quite old at this point).

That could be the parasitic draw drawing down your battery. Do you have any dashcam in parking mode? That would draw it down as well.

Since WFH, I had to put my daily driver on maintainer once a week during cold spells due to the 4G radio draw.

Well I had to fight with the dealership to get them to replace the battery. They basically send that it was my fault for not starting the car everyday.... I will talk with them about it again and see if they can figure out the parasitic draw but I am not holding my breath!

Dealership is not the solution here.

They get paid on warranty work... if they can claim it they would. Its not uncommon for manufacturer warranty to cover battery for 1 year or 1 replacement only.

Take it to a different Mazda dealer. Not the one you had a fight with.

If he can get the battery replaced under warranty, he should. But I wouldn't get the dealer to diagnose the draw. Manufacturers try everything they can to deny warranty claims.

Dealership technicians are paid flat rate (piece work). Easy things like fluid services, brakes, steering, and suspension pay well and are easy to make time on. Diagnostics and problem solving are a lot harder to make time on. If the technician is not good at time management he/she is going to get hosed on his paycheque. This forces the technician to put the need to get paid above what is best for the customer and their vehicle. It has created a system where the more you know the less you make. This has driven most of the talent out of the dealership. Each dealer usually has one or two skilled old guys that are close to retirement and are just riding it out. But the shop is generally staffed with a bunch of parts throwers.

Parasitic draws are one of the hardest and most expensive problems to solve. It will take a skilled technician a few hours to figure out and usually results in a $2000 module being replaced. If it gets misdiagnosed, sadly the customer still gets arm-twisted into paying the bill and still has a broken vehicle.

    I strongly agree with this.
    Very sad, but predominantly true.
