I remember the Nova Scotians getting all Randy about “Biomass” when I was there, mostly because it meant they could keep coal gen running long after they ran out of coal.

Who pays the carbon taxes on all that carbon going into the atmosphere that was otherwise going to be buried. I thought we liked burying carbon?

Canada exports shit-tons of "biomass" to "green energy" plants in the UK as well. Madness.

Biomass is not the same as MSW (Municipal Solid Waste).
One is Wood chips, the other is garbage.

I know they are different things. But neither one is "carbon neutral".

    Except no.
To make fuels from MSW, you need to attempt to condense pyrolysis gas, cleanly. Since your feed is everything from contaminated plastics to metals to diapers, it doesn't really work.
To make fuel from biomass, you can gasify it (simple wood chips) into Synthesis Gas which has tiny impurities and not quite enough H2.

One's a bit of a pain in the ass while the other is fucking near impossible.

LoL^ They might need to be burning potatoes, before long. I think they have Nematodes.

I know they are different things. But neither one is "carbon neutral".
The trees (biomass) spent their lives sucking CO2 out of the air, so converting them into synthetic hydrocarbons and burning them to create that "new" CO2 is technically neutral.
The other argument is that their decomposition would've (eventually) released CO2 back into the atmosphere. The other, other argument is the natural forest fires would've taken deadfall and covered it to CO2. Neither of which benefitting humanity with sweet, sweet energy.

MSW has a pretty tough time claiming carbon neutrality... But hey - Cielo stock went up 30% today, and #LandfillCrisis and Enerkem convinced Suncor to give them a pile of money, so burning trash has a whole lot of sex appeal.

But but but what if you take those CO2 sucking plants, burry them in some mud for a few hundred million years and expose them to heat from the core.

    THEN you burn them.

Is that still. Technically. Carbon Neutral.

That's for others to decide, but as you know, it's been decided, decisively.
It's not about the best idea, it's about the idea that can achieve the best funding and this sector is a mess. People buying heat pumps, burning garbage, banning CH4 and we're getting extremely close to nuking for hydrogen... I think Goldman Sachs just gave $75 million to a company that sends compressed air into caverns which then converts something something kinetic energy something reduced peak electricity load...
It's a fucked place full of snake oil, idiots and geniuses. We just need to pick a winning pony. The prize is inconceivable wealth.

There must be enough zenops posts to keep that plant going for its entire design life

They built it in the wrong place. It needs to be built in the UK.

Price per therm £0.11 in may of 2020, Price per therm January 2022? £2.13
    Cocoa $11,000 per tonne.

So each boiler has similar emission as diesel engine?

I can see how they sell this as a win if the emission is less than just burying garbage in landfills. If shit is going to emit methane/co2 sitting around anyway, may as well get some power out of it. Especially if recycling being a bunch of BS now Asian countries won't take them.

Edmonton does this at their biomass plant with Enerkem. Gasify garbage to produce methanol/ethanol for resale. It reduces the amount of landfill waste quite significantly (supposedly). A lot of the carbon decays anyways so burning it vs wood chips rotting doesn't make as big of difference in carbon output in the long run as one would think. Suncor is pretty invested in this as well, they chipped in over 100 million so far.

Nah it's only carbon neutral when you dump a ton of energy into it and make it happen in months by artificial processes - not millennia by natural processes. There's also a requirement to have a politically connected board member
