I believe Western media where it is said this operation was doomed from the beginning. I think Putin felt if he took out Zelensky, he'd have enough support from Ukraine citizens that he could just strongarm Russian rule and it would become part of Russia again. Both proved to be untrue. I also appreciate the geographical importance of Ukraine, whereby it would be the natural direction of invasion from the West. But does Putin truly believe NATO has any interest in invading Russia? Our citizens would never allow it, and he must know that. It was just overly ambitious from the beginning.

It's been slow over the winter, but offensives from both sides will ramp up when the ground firms. It's going to be a bloodbath with insane casualties on both sides. I don't expect them to come to an agreement any time soon, so there's gonna be a lot more death before diplomacy it appears. I also expect that on the Russian side, they are going to push HARD with an absolute ridiculous amount of manpower - most of which will be eliminated. Regrettably, seemingly without any concern from Putin.

Ukraine stands to win their freedom, and a progressive ideology which in turn brings economic and sociological prosperity.

What does Russia stand to win with taking over Ukraine? I'm not sure that's even their goal anymore. At this point, I see them wanting to hold onto what they have gained in eastern Donbass and Crimea, but that's likely their desired position to maintain in any negotiations. Which is really the opposite of what Ukraine is insisting on.

I understand that Putin doesn't want to share a border with a NATO country (even though he shares a small border with Norway). While I don't think NATO would ever invade a country as it's defensive "in theory" and as you say the public wouldn't stand for it. Pressure from sharing a large border with a NATO country is the reason he's selling or losing whatever influence he may have had over Ukraine. Still terrible reasoning for an invasion as diplomacy could have solved this; threaten to shut off gas to Germany, threaten to trade goods in yuan etc, threaten to form your own anti-NATO organization with China, Iran, NK, etc; push for a reunification of East and West Taiwan. Some examples which were done after.

He may have been led to believe that they would be welcomed as liberators in the western areas and would be an easy annexation, not turn into a huge spectacle. I also think NATO is a cold war relic and needs to be disbanded, but with Russia doing shit like this, it remains relevant.

NATO has never did anything defensively. It has done LOTS of offense, and is now expanding into Asia.

Afghanistan, Syria, Yugoslavia, iraq, Libya, Pakistan etc.

They tried diplomacy in Ukraine ever since the US coupe in 2014, but 14,000 Russians were murdered in the assaults by fascists out east since, and they asked Russia for help.

Russia had no choice. The US would do tland HAS done worse over much less.
