Don't give them any reason not to pay it out. Resign as soon as its deposited, but not a day sooner.

Start new job mid February, call in sick with Covid at old job.

They're certainly big, but I don't know if they are the BEST I've tasted.

Sounds like you currently work at the company I work for as our bonuses get paid the same day haha

    Some good advice.
I would be honest with new employer.
Suggest starting bonus to offset the one you're losing or they can wait for your stated start date.
Definitely a bargaining chip when salary negotiations take place.

The bonus at my company gets paid out on February 28th where you have to be an active employee on that day to receive your bonus.

I want to refrain from asking HR but if I were to get another position and submit my two weeks notice on February 15th for example I would still be an active employee. I have heard that some companies, if leaving for the competition, will let you go right away. I think that means they send you home but you're still an active employee?

    Anyone come across this situation?
Others have mostly nailed this one down. Bonus, is not salary but us humans often think its baseline. If you want to be sure you get it, A: don’t let on you on leaving before the money is there, and give no notice. B: negotiate a signing bonus to cover the amount you will lose OR C: share with your future employer the situation and land on a start date that solve all problems.

I've let the new company know that I would like to stay at my current company so that I can receive my bonus, they understood and didn't seem ti have an issue with it.

I'll see if I get an offer and go from there. I have 5 weeks vacation. I could use one of them to buy some time if needed.

The o&g industry is small, they would find out and it wouldn't look good.

Total conflict of interest if both companies are same industry.

Can an employer fire you for looking or accepting another job before you give your two weeks? Well i guess they can do whatever they want but seems like that would make a good severance case if you've been there for many years.

If leaving to the competition they will likely walk you out right then and there. You may get a small payout in lieu of your final two weeks you were willing to give them but I wouldn't count on it. Your employment would be terminated as of the day they walk you out. If the money is meaningful then wait it out.
This. Many companies will just pay you out and then end your employment. While you might have a case in court to show that was their choice, do you really want to have to deal with that possibility?

    I'd play it safe.

I will wait it out if I get the job offer. Maybe give them 1 week notice instead of 2 maybe.

I haven't been offered it yet, second interview went well tho. I did tell them i want to stay at my current role until the end of February so i can receive my bonus and they seemed to be understanding.

Employers understand this. Be open and honest when the offer is given, start date is the single most commonly adjusted item on any offer, it's no big deal.

That's good. If the new company wasn't interested in pushing back a start date a few weeks so you could collect a bonus, I would be questioning if that's the kind of company I would want to work for.

We had a guy do this in 2020. He followed a bunch of guys who started a new company but didn't tell the company he was currently working for that he was leaving. He answered emails but could never be reached by phone. I guess someone called him one day and he had changed his voicemail to the new company he was working at which ended up being how he got caught. No idea how long he was double dipping but he was fired immediately.
