It’s pretty hilarious that anyone could consider Ontario’s budget “austere”

    Normalized insanity.

Nothing to do with government incompetence at all.

The solution to gov't incompetence is to give more money to the incompetent people so that we can have more expensive incompetence.

It's everything to do with government incompetence. They cut the legal aid budget by 30% in a year despite the warnings it would cause a backlog in the court system. Now people here are whining that their boy Pat is stuck in jail due to court backlog because people who can't afford a lawyer take longer in the court system than people with a lawyer.

You're confusing a incompetence for a lack of resources.

Incompetence is why they created the lack of resources. You seem to have a hard time grasping this simple concept.

Thanks for pointing out that this is a provincial matter Kert. Timely access to the judicial system system is a problem that hasn't been getting better.

No, the gov't just sucks at doing things. We should not expect different.

I have no idea what kert is saying, but Ontario hit its debt limit in 2020. The feds now back their debt. Their last set of bonds were junk grade.

    Unequivocally false.

If you think court backlogs are due to some cuts in legal aid, you're proving to be as delusional as you present yourself.

They were already starting to see the backlog in 2019 in the first year of the cuts, prompting a frantic attempt to re-fund it (which did involve begging the feds to cover the bill, but they only covered part of immigration and refugee-related legal aid). So thebacklog was starting to ramp up before Covid hit, so they tried the moratorium on evictions to give the system a break (not wanting to have people evicted during a pandemic, and those people being the ones who typically need legal aid amde it an easy move), but then all those cases came back when the moratorium was dropped, bringing in the slow-moving groups back into the system.

Those pesky poors and their rights and freedoms always get in the way of prompt jurisprudence.

Like usual you miss the root cause. Of course things were backing up well before covid, when they were trying to massively increase the throughput in the courts. Funding of legal aid, would be the band aid they're trying to put on the bullet wound. Governments trying to use the courts as a revenue stream is the bullet.

    Context is everything.

He said when the economy is strong budgets practically balance themselves. In the context of "should we penny pinch and contract the economy, or spend and stimulate the economy".

No brainer. He was 100% correct.

Governments don't expand or contract the economy by varying spending.

Of course they can. Especially in a downturn.
