Default 1963 Merc Monterey Resto/lowrider build thread

Back in my early days of Beyond, alot of you knew about my 88 Monte SS lowrider build
    https://forums.beyond.ca/threads/197...ht=Monte+carlo

I'm super ghetto and lowriders have always been on my mind and I could never get that thing out of my brain after I sold it. I've looked high and low for it, wanted to buy it back, with no luck.

While looking for another lowrider project and constantly looking for 60s impalas, I realized, I'm now too poor to even buy a partial project impala.

Then, I came across this 63 merc breezeway. I've never seen one before and haven't seen a 2 door hardtop anywhere else, it's so different, I had to have it and the price was right.

This was 'basically' a one owner all original car, the only thing not original when I got it was a new carb, brake booster, exhaust, 15" torq thrusts, a front seat cover and a cd player.

The day I got it home. 63 Mercury Monterey Breezway 352 3 speed cruise-o-matic

The next day. I sold the wheels back to the previous owner

Incoming. 14x7 USA 100 spoke all chrome with 2 wing knockoffs

Next I had to release my obvious inner ghetto and get some music in there

But before I can do that, I have to gut the trunk, scrape up all the 60 year old shit out of it and check for rust holes and mock up for battery racks and pumps for the hydraulics.

I'm happy to report, NO RUST HOLES! Also, I picked up a project 5th wheel for the trunk that I'm using to see what I can fab up. I'll be refinishing the wheel and trying my hand at powdercoating it chrome and clearing it with powdercoat, see how it turns out.

Here's the tired old 352. It runs very well, but its leaking like a siv from at least the oil pan, possibly rear main. I've been debating trying to tackle it, but a buddy of mine talked me into pulling it and rebuilding it. He's an engine builder, so with him on board helping me with it, this thing will be running like a champ for the next 60 years.

The plan is to just get the engine done for cruising season and just be happy with it until next winter when the hydraulics are the next priority. This thing is going to be my most in depth project I've ever taken on and I can't wait.

Already has a good cruising stance to it, but it'll be sweet laid out. Should get some titanium drag blocks so you can throw big spark showers lolol

Well yesterday was the first time I've been able to get it on the hoist. There were oil leaks and gas leaks and who knows what else going on under there.

    1. Fuel leak from the sending unit, replaced that, magically no leak and the fuel gauge works again lol snapped one of the bolts in half, fabbed up 2 new ones.

    2. Under my feet confirmed my suspicions of holes in the floor, but only small holes and only under the foot areas both sides.

    3. Exhaust leak coming from somewhere, found a big hole by the y pipe basically under the back seat, welded the hole shut, what a difference already in sound for sure, probably even felt a bit more butt power.

    4. Oil leaking from who knows where. Cleaned up all of the oil underneath, couldn't find a certain source, until I checked the pan bolts, every one of them loose. I'm sure there will still be a leak somewhere TBD.

    5. Greased everything I could and checked for more rust holes, nothing. Frame is solid just surface rust, looks great.

    6. Exhaust hanger was broken in the back, so I welded a new one in instead of those steel straps.

It was nice to find and fix basic shit. Next days off I'm taking a road trip to pick up some goodies. No decent pics of the maintenance yesterday, but here's a little cruise for a good cause pic that we did on Sunday.

You should grease the steering box if it has the 3 bolt cover / one fill hole. Super easy to do and made a huge difference in my old bird. Literally took a solid 1.5” of play out of the steering wheel and stopped the car wanting to change its own lanes.

Sweet car, debating on whether or not to make mine a lowrider or just keep it a quick street car, time will tell but custom billet parts are in the works

Yep I greased it and it's already a huge difference. What do you have? Do I have to convince you to build a lowrider lol

Well my plan of picking up my hydraulics next time I'm home isn't happening, the fucking guy backed out and sold everything to someone else.

Either way, I'll get a setup but probably won't be ready this season. I did however change the headhnit and install components in one if the doors today lol
