Default Changing oil by extracting from the top?

I'm going to maybe sound like an idiot here...do any Beyonders use something like this to change the oil in their cars?

    https://www.amazon.ca/Powerbuilt-647...058853&sr=8-17

I've always done it from the bottom, never even thought about this...how effective is it at getting all the oil out?

Is there a cheaper contraption I could use? As for the filter, it's a Bimmer so it's changed from the top.

most oil pans have baffles and stuff in them to keep oil in the pickup tube area, i wouldn't think this would work (well) unless the engine is intended to use an extractor.

It's not the size that matters, it's the taste it leaves in your mouth.

isn't this procedure standard on some engines? Mini or Smart or something?

I know that equipment rental companies like United and Sunbelt have many of their rigs equipped to change oil on the fly, without draining. For things like Light Plants or Herman Nelsons, etc.
But I think they have actually drilled & tapped fittings and hoses on their own.

Yeah Smarts have no drain plugs and have to be sucked out.

The only thing I would add to this discussion is that if you are intending to remove contaminants from an engine/oil by extracting from the top, I personally would insert one additional step. I would extract all of the oil, add additional oil, and then extract again to try and dilute the remaining contaminants in the added oil and get those out as well. But potentially involves adding enough oil to actually run the engine before the second extraction.

Would be a hell of a trick to use something that pumps via dipstick on a car without a dipstick!

The old tale with JDM cars though is that they’re all full of sludge cause this is standard practice in Japan

This seems complicated and pointless. Engines have been fine with the small amounts left in them doing it the conventional way, flushing it like this is a waste of money and time.

If you change your oil often enough none of this is a problem.

I do it frequently and use an extractor pump from the dipstick, primarily because the oil pan on the S3 is plastic with a plastic plug.

the why - it's cleaner... Which of us hasn't slopped or spilled the drain tray - going straight into final storage is awesome.

If you don't have to crawl under your car for an oilchange why would you?

I bought a pneumatic one because I thought it was a great idea.

    What Thaco said is true.
Turned it it wasn't great and didn't end up saving much time so I do it the old fashioned way.
I keep it for other fluid changes though.

Why wouldn’t you just use your lift and extendible oil drain container? It’s super easy!
