Ya I think it depends how you define tech. If a person considers a job in IT as “tech”, sure, layoffs are happening and more to come. Businesses housing bloated IT ops organizations is a fantastic waste of money.

There’s lots of growth in the broader tech space though. I’m not even listed as open to work and get contacted every week or two from a recruiter offering a 25% bump.

Don't know how this will fly but seems to be a new(?) work flow to embrace. Like if I get something done on time, why would I care if you work 8-5 or 5-8?

I understand a lot of operational tasks doesn't fall in this but some workload will.
As long as IT outage windows are factored in then I'm good with this, actually if most people wanted to work after hours, then my outage window could be 2PM on a Tuesday.

    I think it moved.

I marked myself as "open to work" in linkedin, and got about 3 recruiter calls a day. Not even actively working, just willing to chat. There's a serious shortage in tech, or at least what I do, in tech.
Wife wasn't looking and just got an offer that was too good to pass up in the tech field.....see how it turns out for her. Going to be better for me. 7.2, here I come baby

    Edit: 2.7 if I'm lucky.

Also she is WFH exclusively with some client site visits sprinkled in, if required.

    LinkedIn?

I opened myself up to a recruiter last year, I got a job offer very quickly, the interviewer offered me the job in the interview.

I'm not sure it means anything in the broader IT market though. And Calgary's IT industry is teensy tiny, I don't think this area is affected by tech swings as much, if at all.

I got competing job offers, from TO based companies. Full remote. All in tech. I get hammered daily by recruiters for jobs all over North America. Maybe the local market is doing layoffs, but tech is still on fire.

Before I blocked/unsubed all of them, I used to get all sorts of "job offers". Many simply aren't legit, they're just looking to see if you're interested.

Suncor is going back to 5 days in the office effective mid next month. Was previously up to 2 days at home. Any other big companies cancel hybrid work recently?

Sounds like another round of optional layoffs. Actually a good 5d chess move. Keep headcount falling.

Fuck. I was about to type out that there can't be anyone left there dumb enough to not show up to that pressure cooker for the next few months...
    But then I realized it's 2023.

    You are so correct!

What are the bonuses like at Suncor? What is worth having this eternal layoff looming over the horizon? Other than the fact that im sure 50% of people don't do anything.

Maybe I answered my own question

Optional layoffs with no severance. Winning.

A bunch of people that have been there for a while have a DB pension that's worth toughing it out for. Or in some cases, if you are close enough, the severance will bridge your last couple years to get full DB pension.

Bonuses for the rank and file are usually best at smaller organizations. Large shops like Suncor have a hard time identifying top performers (if any) and this don't incentivize them the same way smaller places would.
