    Default Shaw - retiring boxes

I got a call from Shaw the other night and they were providing me some offers even though my contract isn't up until the summer. They offered me the following:

2 year contract for Fibre Gig Internet
    Total TV Package
    3 Blue Curve Portals

    All for $130 + tax a month

During the call I learned that my boxes are too dated and would increase the price of the offer - I was confused about it and he didn't really explain why apart from the fact that it is dated technology. I looked into it some more and for some reason this sales guy couldn't tell me that they are retiring the boxes - see link https://support.shaw.ca/t5/tv-articl...des/ta-p/32715

Now that I found this, I mean my equipment still all works fine but I don't know for how long. I currently own 3 portals and a Gateway. I asked if I could sell it back to Shaw to which he said no but said I could sell it privately. I'm not even sure if I can now, knowing this.

    Thoughts?

Actually pretty interesting. Looks like they're retiring cable tv completely.

Bluecurve runs purely over IP, so you're getting video over IP network with the bluecurve boxes. Guess that means they're freeing up everything on cable to be IP bandwidth only. Faster internet, more efficient video distribution.

Unless that offer is tempting, just ignore them and keep using it. When another decomm wave comes for your gears, they may give you upgrade for free. Because by then, they will either lose a customer or cost them too much to support old gear.

I have been using the same TV terminals since the move to HD and really don't watch cable any more other than odd hockey game. Shaw just gave me new terminals free of charge.

I think scraping tv is how they can eventually upgrade to docsis 4.0 to achieve symmetrical gig up / gig down offerings. Right now channels take a significant amount of spectrum on cable lines.

Telus gives me a my 4k boxes for free. You'd think shaw would offer that as well.

Good to know...I'll tell them to pound sand until my contract is up - thanks!

Might be worth calling them back to decline the offer and just say you won’t pay for the boxes. See if they’ll comp them and give you the deal. Never know

    Shaw has 4K now?

I gave up on them after several years of them pinky promising it was a month away.

Have never had issues with my Telus 4K streams, but then again I have FTTH.

Shaw's had 4K blue curve boxes for years now. 4K channels are still rare as fuck regardless of provider, and 4K content on those channels (especially sports) is even more rare.

Well yes. But there's no separate line item and my bill did not increase when I got 4k boxes.
Maybe "no additional charge" is more accurate.

You sound like a Shaw sales rep.

    “Do you guys have 4K?

Oh yea our boxes are totally 4K.

Oh so you have 4K tv content and channels to view on them?

Well… no. We promise is coming next month. In the meantime just watch Netflix .

    Uhhh ok”

I’m just a hater of crtc and Canadian content providers.

But yes, you want 4k content? Disney plus, iTunes, Netflix. Who even buys tv from Shaw or telus?

So glorious not dealing with Shaw or Telus anymore.
Don't miss the feeling like I'm in Mexico having to negotiate "deals" for hours for every little thing. F*ck off!
