I second this also. Or some sort of 1/2 ton with a topper for the doggo, you'll get lots of engine options. Maybe even add a heater kit and comfy dog furniture and carpet in the back. Get a nice trim level to keep the human family happy. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
My brother has an older Escalade ESV 6.2. IF he drives it like in a funeral parade he gets 5L/100km with the cylinder deactivation tech. Just throwing it out there, probably wouldn't tow much more than 4000 with it though, that trans doesn't like it. He does tow lots with around the city (big boat, travel trailer, car toy trailer) but has upgraded all the trans cooling etc to keep it happy. For towing heavy in mountains he has an old Yukon XL with the 8.1.
I absolutely LOVE my diesel X5 35d. Some even do come with 3rd row seating. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote

X5's aren't big enough for a family of 5 IMO.
Get a minivan, ditch the trailer and the dog.
Life is good.
Agreed! The 3rd row is fairly tight in an x5 for anyone. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote

Best X5 is 2 row X5.
Especially now that the X7 is a thing.
I wish I could retrofit the second row to be captains chairs and go down to being a 4 seater.

I have dug deep into the engine of the w164 cdi motor
Parents have one. Swirl port motor failed. Puts the car into limp mode as intake flaps get stuck in one position. To correct required a pretty big disassembly. Learned alot about the engine through this process. After doing such a major repair fixing other things became easier.
Parents still own it. It has accrued alot of mileage but that is only because my dad is retired and has the time and skill to repair a large (very large) number of issues that have come up. This includes complex electrical stuff due to a few design flaws (ie: SAM module location allows water seepage directly into it). Ridiculous.
You are looking at thousands and thousands of dollars spent diagnosing and repairing stuff on the vehicle if you are not DIYing it. Keep in mind this involves alot of vehicle down time.
Do not touch with a 10 foot pole unless you are a competent tech willing to spend a lot of time fixing shit.
That said. I love driving it. Pulls hard. I actually brought it up from Texas for them when we purchased it. Such a great car on the highway. I too want one but simply cannot imagine having to sort the vehicle out to get it to the point of being a reliable daily driver. My dad only keeps doing it because he enjoys something to fix.
Hope that helps.
