If you're buying used then I'd avoid any model that was a Car2go one. Good chance you're buying one of those when they sold them off.

A Mercedes mechanic I know said the diesel MBs are great if you are using them for longer trips, but will cost a fortune to keep on the road if you're using it for short trips (e.g., 6km). I didn't dig into specifically why, but I trust his opinion.

IIRC @Buster had a GL of that vintage and got rid of it, and said something about it costing a lot to keep on the road as well. Maybe he has some anecdotes for you.
I would only buy a GL if it was new and under warranty. I dumped ours within a month of the warranty expiring.

We're happier with the Atlas. I would go captain's chairs for sure after doing both. Access to the third row that does not involve kids climbing over seats is important.

Accurate. In my Ody, the second row is 40/20/40 but we removed the 20 and now it's captains chairs.

You realize you are talking to the guy who made his own furniture out of salad bowls right?

This thread needs a background track...

On a serious note. How long will it take the diesel to warm up when its -20c? It won't warm up on idle.
Kids are not cheap, factor in maintence. The fuel savings may be offset by your maintence bill..

If ford has figured how to get my dads 6.7L diesel in his truck to warm up on idle, I'm sure mercedes has done it with an engine the size of a sewing machine.

Adblue system, oil leaks from difficult places and rages transmission story have pretty much convinced me otherwise

The Expy is paid off this year, so that might make it a little easier to deal with when it's not costing me $1100 a month on fuel, payments and insurance

I’m a diesel guy but I don’t have any love for Mercedes diesels.

I love my 335d (when it works) but would likely get an X5D for my fiancé too down the road despite all the pain with my 335d.

I would likely be deleting and tuning any diesel I buy. I am guessing he didn't have the optional DOC cat installed?
Not to my knowledge, thing smells like a 70's school bus inside.

Can we talk about the 23L/100km??? Tell your wife to stop warming the vehicle for 30 minutes. A lot easier than taking on an absolute pile of a SUV (GL). With those driving habits I’d be worried about coking up the valves on an eco boost. Need an Italian tune up.

It's the 3v triton and a well looked after one at that...no ticking or anything - I'm not baller enough to own an ecoboost expy

Yeah that's like playing tennis against the drapes though

Even 17L/100km is a rich man’s game these days.

Get an F150, it'll get better mileage.

Modern diesels have managed to take every single thing that was advantageous about a diesel and delete it while taking nothing good from the ICE world.
    They are a cataclysmic failure.

I am mildly optimistic that this will change with the production of synthetic diesel, which is A REAL THING, but the current batch of offerings just makes me angry.

Agree. GTDI is better than diesels these days in essentially every application.

I think there was talk of a 3.0 Powerstroke Expy for 2023

I guess Ford never brought the TDCi or TDDi motors here? Those were million mile motors in the Transit platform

There was some 3.0L Ford diesel
I don't know anything about it. It had zero advantages over Ford's GTDI engines.
