Default So I bought a Doberman......

After waiting 20+ years to finally be ready to get another Doberman. I pulled the trigger on one in Ontario this morning and should have him by months end.

Does anyone have recommendations for a solid trainer. I will do my best to train the dog but would really like him to be dialed in and very obedient.

Any advice would be great as its been a while since I have had such a large dog

I grew up with a doberman, he was a super sweet guy and definitely didn't have the personality that went with the 'scary' looks. Though no suggestion on trainers in Calgary, I am sure others will.

definately a sweet dog, kinda a neurotic personality with lots of energy. I have a Beauceron which is a French dog that is very closely related as it is one of the "Feed stocks" used for the Doby...

I personally recommend a female, but I reckon you have secured a Male.

I can take my beauceron for a full on 12K bike ride with 600M elevation for almost two hours... and it still wants to go for a walk when we get home. sigh. She also never seems to sleep

I know he's just a puppy, but he looks pretty stocky for a Doberman. Is he purebread, or mixed?

We had two at the same time when I was growing up. Lovely dogs.

We had some private lessons with Velvetanne from Raising Canine in the NW. That was during early COVID lockdown where they couldn't do group classes, but she was excellent and knew her stuff.

Velvet-anne is a wicked stripper name. That is all.

We have used Clever Canines for training and for doggie daycare too - I assume you'll need that as well. It's close to Chinook so not too far from your place.

Disagree, I think it's the perfect approach.

I've heard great things about this place.

I went through a similar training camp with Cultured Canines. They train mostly outside and in downtown Calgary, which is great since you primarily want to train them to behave outside. Training them inside is easy with no distractions. As a puppy, this inside training is stuff you can do yourself and with the family. But as an adolescent, Cultured Canines outdoor training (or similar) IMO is a must as they teach you to interact with other dogs and people in an outdoor setting, going on pack walks, sits/stays/commands in the presence of many distractions, going up and down stairs, elevators and escalators etc.

There are places around town that also offer $5 drop in classes for puppies ages 8-12 weeks for puppy socials. This helps with socializing your puppy so it learns to get along with other random breeds and people
