Similar to the flower box idea, you could also just dig straight down if you wanted to minimize the at-grade appearance. Have a 12" diameter hole where you insert a pvc pipe a couple feet straight down, topped with a nice grate. Barely even noticeable.

Like. But I bet a 4" pipe would even work.

I considered a hole straight down and I like this idea but I’m uncertain how far I’d need to go down to prevent freezing issues or what diameter I would need to manage the volume of potential ice. Digging an 8’ hole to get below the frost line seems like a ton of work to manage some ice on the sidewalk. I could also fabricate a box in order to create a large void under the sidewalk that the drips accumulate in. The ice block can simply fill the void through winter then melt off in the spring.
    I like neat cars.
