So what you theorize is that they think 'any news is good news', even though an assault basically occurred on a stage of what they are trying to re-popularize as a classy event?

Academy are looking into it, police have been involved. Will broke down embarrassingly, crying during his acceptance speech apologizing and rambling, and now he might lose his trophy. He's obviously going through mental health issues, and now past allegations that he abused his kids are basically bolstered.

Its a black eye on the Oscars, no doubt about it. Will looks terrible in all this. If this is a weak attempt to get people to watch, it may just do the exact opposite. I never really had a reason not to watch the Oscars, but now I absolutely do.

- There was to be a bit. It was planned. The network knew there was going to be a bit, but either thought it would be different or didn't know the details for plausible deniability and avoidance of potential legal liability.
- Rock had planned a bit with Smith. Was this the same plan that the Network thought was coming? Maybe, Maybe not.
- Did Smith actually do what the plan with Rock was? Maybe, but probably not.

All of the events and responses are consistent with this.
