    Default 4AGE / MR2 full rebuild and/or engine swap (AW11)

    Hi Guys,

I just picked up a 86 AW11 and I plan to eventually rebuild the engine. The car came with a spare Redtop engine but has a few missing peices (no cams).

The transmission has the famous 5th gear pop out issue. I am not sure if rebuilding is the right approach. But the previous owner also had a spare tranny from a Celica (not sure on details).

Any recommendations on mechanics/shops? What is the expect cost?

Also, Wouldnt it be cheaper to source a new used engine?

Yeah well I wonder how they get the soft flowing caramel inside the Caramilk bar but you don't see me making a god damn thread about it. Slap your wife Baygirl, straighten him out.

You're going to have a tough time sourcing parts for this engine, and even more sourcing a transmission. I would pull it and get it looked at as you may only have the option of rebuilding.

That being said, a 3s would be fun in that car, or go full mental and K swap it.

What's your plan for the car? Keep it stock for "collector status" or ok to mod it out?

There's kits for motor mounts to toss a 3S-GTE motor in there and get more than enough fun out of it.

Rebuilding can be done. Probably go aftermarket on internals as that will be easier to source.

Transmission. Good luck. Tough to find parts. Rebuilding isn't too difficult with the right parts.
I'd test that Celica tranny out. Hopefully not the awd version.

Ill upload pics when I am back in town. I havent seen the car in person yet either lol.

I plan on keeping it for as long as I possible. So nothing insane. I want it as "stock" as possible. I dont mind a 3S-GTE swap, but those engines arent easy to come by too. I have little to no experiecne when it comes to engine rebuilds or swaps. This is why I want to find a mechanic that is experienced in these particular build. Its not a daily driver, its going to be part 98% of the year when I am not in town. The car runs perfect right now, but its a matter of time I will pull the trigger and refinish the car or when I finally relocate back to Canada.

K Swap sounds awesome, but I want to keep my speedometer stock...

Just throwing this out there also. But a 2ZZ swap? Easier to source than 3S GTE

The engine bay would look sick with a K, but I dont have any knowledge on this kind of work. Unless I can find a really reliable mechanic with reasonable rates lol.

Also, I have this extra engine on the side. Nudes for those who are interested.

Nice! From Red Deer. I think I saw the ad.

Some people love those stock motors. But I feel there's better options.

    Priced it out.
    Gen4 3S-GTE motor. E153 LSD transmission.
Swap kit with all you need including new clutch and flywheel. .
Just under $10k cdn for parts plus shipping (est. $500).
I'd suspect around $4-$5k for labour, rewiring, etc.
I might be way off on labour. Always have done everything myself so others can chime in.
But I'm quite confident on the part costs.

    Yes Red Deer!
Seems quite a big investment for the 3S. 5k labor seems a bit low on the estimation. How much would it cost to rebuild a 4age with the stock tranny?

My 3S-GTE was rebuilt locally (Precise, no longer around)
I think I paid about $2000 for the bottom end but I did supply my own forged pistons and rebuilt my own head.
    Issue was a spun bearing.

Engine removal and installation is probably about $2500.
Benefit is you shouldn't have much troubleshooting or setup time with a stock rebuild using the same ecu and harnesses.

LHD is the way to go. Even driving RHD in Asia seems odd. I dont like shifting with my left hand.
