Default Kenney wants to pump money into a fictional Hyoerloop

    What's with this douchebag?

What's wrong with a proven and available high speed train?

UK-based Broughton Capital Group, in cooperation with China-East Resources Import & Export Co., have agreed in principle to provide a combined US$550M finance and Master EPC arrangement respectively, to accelerate the development of a TransPod Line between Edmonton and Calgary.

"To finance the first phase of the project, which consists of the airport connection of Edmonton," said Sebastien Gendron, co-founder and CEO of TransPod
TransPod is still awaiting approval from the Alberta government and Gendron confirmed the province has not yet committed any money to the project.
TransPod will need to negotiate the land acquisition for the test track with the City of Edmonton and Edmonton International Airport. There is no government of Alberta involvement in that process.
Premiere supports private investment into province, news at 11. Hyperloop is bunk but if they want to throw private money into the province, fill your boots.

Am I cornfused, or is this Chinese funding terrible infrastructure projects??

If so, I'm all in as long as there is no backstopping by the gov.

If western countries were smart, we'd pull the classic "appreciating assets in our name, depreciating assets in theirs" and laugh all the way to WW3

LOL, I'd love to see the economic projections used for this.

A feasibility study released last year estimated the project would create up to 140,000 jobs and add $19.2 billion to the region's GDP throughout the construction.
The study also projects the tube-based transportation would be able to make the 300-kilometre trip between Edmonton and Calgary in 45 minutes, for an estimated cost of $90 per person.
Is there really that much in-person business between Calgary center and Edmonton center for enough people to buy $90 tickets? As always, the problem is what the hell you do when you get to the destination without a vehicle - until there are cheap autonomous vehicles or even associated Car2Go type facilities this sounds like an absolute waste.

The specific use-case for the finished product targets freight, and is cited as being the driving force behind the system being profitable.

Fast transport of people is just an added bonus essentially.

140,000 jobs is some Theo Fleury, trucker convey, quality level of projections.
I feel it's probably closer to 140 million.

I think a high-speed transit mega thread would be wicked.

Asides from the cool factor, I still don't see a point to a high speed anything between Calgary and Edmonton.

It will take 45 minutes. Add another 15 to get to the station. (because downtown Calgary would be very financially implausible), plus another 10-15 of fucking around to board and wait, then 10-15min at a stop in Red Deer, and another 10-15 at YEG. So you'll save 1.5 hours, but have no vehicle once you're there.

Yyc to Banff makes more sense than this.

I have a buddy who was asked to invest in a YYC-Banff train thingy, or to invest in the real estate at the Banff end, it wasn't clear. Anyway, what I took out of that conversation is that it would be cheaper to buy a fleet of coaches and give 100% free rides from Calgary to Banff on the hour every hour 24/7/365 than to even do high-speed rail along the existing tracks. Like MUCH cheaper.

Hyper loop to the airport seems like a cool thing.

Hyperloop to Edmonton I question what the target market is.

I can’t think of any time I go to Edmonton where I wouldn’t want my car on the other side.

People realize Edmonton is a driving city just like Calgary right?

And it still makes more sense than this.

This all seems like a great way to start a project as private, but end up bilking the government for a billion dollars because "green"
