Am I cornfused, or is this Chinese funding terrible infrastructure projects??

If so, I'm all in as long as there is no backstopping by the gov.

If western countries were smart, we'd pull the classic "appreciating assets in our name, depreciating assets in theirs" and laugh all the way to WW3
High speed rail in Cali is now costing $105B and rising.

$500M is a drop in the bucket for whats to come.

We don't need this debt trap. We will never have enough ridership to make sense.

HSR only works if you a linking 2 mega cities with 10M+ people.

Asides from the cool factor, I still don't see a point to a high speed anything between Calgary and Edmonton.

It will take 45 minutes. Add another 15 to get to the station. (because downtown Calgary would be very financially implausible), plus another 10-15 of fucking around to board and wait, then 10-15min at a stop in Red Deer, and another 10-15 at YEG. So you'll save 1.5 hours, but have no vehicle once you're there.

Yyc to Banff makes more sense than this.
If anything, it could be beneficial to cities like Calgary and Edmonton to act as hubs to surrounding cities - GP, Fort Mac for Edmonton; Hat and Lethbridge for Calgary - where people can come to town, fuck around for a bit and then go home. But I think it requires that both cities have a far more robust downtown offering during non-weekday times. A hyperloop would be excessively fancy for that purpose though.

But if the purpose of a hyperloop is to facilitate cargo, I could see some utility in it. But the investment in the innovation seems a little much though.

"a Supertrain. You give the people a good reason to get out of their cars. You give them great coffee, great music - they will park and ride. I know they will."

    No they won't, Loser!
