I like special-purpose aircraft. This is a cool one.

Rumor is they've bought a large swath of land East of Chesterslough, and are attempting to put a runway there.

They're certainly big, but I don't know if they are the BEST I've tasted.

I hope they can afford the fuel for it with the way it is today.

Grew up in Yellowknife and with Buffalo Airways around got a nearly daily dose of WWII planes. They did water bombing for the whole NWT and used to run these PBYs. Would sometimes see them do a scooping run in the harbor if there was a fire near town. I heavily heavily considered going to work for them when I was a teenager, they run an aviation mechanic school on their old junk.

    Surprised nobody bumped this thread.

Official announcement was a couple of weeks ago. This facility is huge compared to Vikings current hanger capability.

This is being built out near Lyalta.

In the last couple of months they have opened an Esso and a Burger King at the location.

That second vimeo about the history of De Havilland made me all warm and fuzzy inside. Super cool.

Would be neat if DeHavilland gets involved with the Mosquito restoration going on down in Nanton now that they have a local facility.

Mosquito rebuild is currently halted. There's only one manufacturing plant in the world that produces the proper airworthy 3-ply plywood for it, and they're a little busy mobilizing soldiers to de-nazify some place.

Funny you mention that, I had a lengthy conversation with Richard about it a few weeks ago. They are still working on the rebuild of the fuselage (though it's largely complete) and assorted bits as they do have some plywood on hand still, it's the plywood stock for the wing restoration that's held up for the time being.

I just think it's hilariously ironic that they can't finish building a WW2 bomber, because of a war involving "nazi's" and Russia.

Haha ain't that the truth. To add an extra layer of history-doesn't-repeat-but-it-rhymes, they're looking at doing an end-run around the sanctions by funneling the plywood through a third country - very similar to how the US got titanium out of Russia during the cold war.

I snapped a couple pics of it when I was down there this summer. Pretty cool seeing the way the grain is laid down on the fuselage
