Default anyone uses Wal mart brand synthetic motor oil? as their price is much lower at $20

their 5W 30 full synthetic motor oil, is $20, whereas all the other major brand, such as Pennzoil, Castrol etc. are at $35 on sale. I am wondering if anyone uses the wal mart brand and how is it compares to others

Unless it's for a high performance engine you're probably good to go. But I doubt you'd be asking this if it was for a car you loved dearly and that was the case, like mine is

(does this count as a humble brag @Buster )

Every time I see a happy hopping thread, I expect to read about yet another (usually borderline unreasonable) way of pinching pennies. This thread delivers.

I think they sell Kirkland synthetic at Costco now as well. Might spend $10 in fuel to get there, but you probably save $15 on oil, and you only have to drive an extra 30-45 min. You could actually probably drain it into the same container at the next oil change and return it for a full refund. Am I doing it right?

its like using cheap car parts, i feel like you'll end up paying the price for it in the end, oil is the like the life line of your car. invest in good quality oil.

For the amount that you realistically change oil in a year (i usually will do 3-4 times) is it worth it?

If you change your oil on schedule, use whatever the cheapest oil is that meets the spec. If you don't, use even cheaper oil.
Brands of oil matter even less than brands of gasoline.

I heard a life hack is you can actually use diesel instead of motor oil.

Got to be quick with maths but it’s pretty cheap.

As long as the oil meets the spec. Its fine.
This whole 'good quality oil' thing. Its a myth. I used to top up and put the cheapest oil I could find in my old Honda. No issues.

Exactly this. It's not 1923, specs are a thing and all oils that meet them are fine. It's not like Wal-Mat or Costco built a refinery, they are buying from the same folks that that make the other name-brands.

OP needs to conduct extensive research on BobIsTheOilGuy.com for a few months to help formulate an informed opinion.

No bullshit, when the old GMC city buses used to come in with extra dirty oil, the mechanics would leave the old filter on, drain the main oil and replace with diesel, then send it out for a shift.
Apparently, it spruced them right up and they'd get a proper oil change. New Flyer buses? Not so much.

It is a fine motor oil. I use it to top up my girlfriends car all the time since it uses so much (Hyundai Theta 2 woes).
Kirkland Signature and Walmart Supertech/American AmazonBasics Synthetic are all the same oil by Warren Distribution.

That said, Pennzoil and Mobil1 go down to be $2-$5 more on sale. Just bought a few jugs of M1 for $35 less a $10 Canadian Tire gift card. Pennzoil has similar deals a few times a year as well.

You guys, it's all about the hot dog water.
I'm using that for coolant now.
The hot dog molecules emulsified provides lasting corrosion protection.

What if you only had to "top up" because you used the cheapest oil you could find? WHAT A VICIOUS CIRCLE.

I’m trying to recall the last time I needed to “top up” my oil.

    Yea. It’s never happened.

Now you're fucking confusing the OP even more.

Should he be getting the Great Value hot dogs?

Or should he be getting the Schneiders smokies at more than double the price per 100g?
