Size: 133.7 KBLong time lurker, donÂ’t often post here though. Thought you guys might appreciate an interesting car. This is my 1972 Porsche 914 1.7. My grandfather bought this car new in March 1972 and it has been a family heirloom of sorts since. In the early 80Â’s he gave it to my uncle in Calgary and my uncle and my mom drove it to Toronto where it essentially sat until 2020. When my uncle gave it to me he said if I can get it back to Calgary I can have it so I contacted an auto transporter who wasnÂ’t able to help because the brakes were seized, so I ended getting my own truck and trailer to bring this out. The car hadnÂ’t moved since 1986 and has been sitting in his garage in downtown Toronto untouched. October 2020 my wife was crazy enough to let me pack up the family and go get this car and start the process of getting it back on the road.
Over the winter I essentially worked on it non stop, learning the Bosch D-jet robot fuel injection system in and out and preparing it for an out of province inspection. After installing a new fuel pump and cleaning the fuel injection distributor points it fired up and runs like a top even after sitting for all those years. It is basically in stock form with the exception of ground control coil over setup on the rear and Koni adjustable front struts and a new modern stereo.

IÂ’ll try to update this thread as I go but wanted to share

Thanks! At first I was a bit heartbroken that it wasn’t a 911 but after I learned more about it and drove it I couldn’t be more happy with it! Yes it is incredibly slow in a straight line but the handling feel more than makes up for it.

Wicked. Saw one of these on the road the other day and it brought a big smile to my face. Used to see them on the road from time to time back in the day but these days they are a rare sight.

A little update on this, love the car but got bored with the limited power of the vw engine. With current mileage the engine was tired and in need of a rebuild. Comparing the costs it made sense to actually upgrade the engine. Currently swapping in a Subaru EJ205 and 5MT converted to FWD. Got the engine, ECU, harness and transmission over the winter and spent most of the winter preparing the harness. Next steps are finish the transmission’s FWD conversion so it will turn the front output stubs only, fabricate a cradle to hold the engine and trans.

End result should be a car that weighs a little under 2100 lbs and puts out about 250 HP.

That'll move good. The trans conversion is easy, just weld the center diff.
