But housing is a basic necessity of life and should be accessible/affordable for everyone, shouldn't it?
    I assume this is sarcasm?

Now we are asking the right questions. What role should the government play in providing universal access to housing?

    Yes.

Generally, I believe people should have to fend for themselves.

Let's consider what humans need to live longer than 72 hours:

Water: Water is a public utility.
Energy: Electricity is a public utility. Fuel is privately provided.
    Food: Food is privately provided.
Shelter: Almost all shelter is privately provided. There is some gov't provided housing.
    Clothing: Clothing is privately provided.

So which markets function properly, and which don't?

    Hmm.

Buyer ban is about 10 years too late.
    Yep.
Cdn government can't even track all the movement of foreign real estate purchases. They have no clue.
But also why care? They make more money that way by increasing everything including property taxes.

Yea woe are Canadians having foreign money buying luxury homes and coming here and paying taxes in our country.

That’s why millennials can’t afford starter homes.

The foreign buyers restrictions and speculator restrictions are dumb.

    I hate the word unscrupulous.

You're either the bug or the windshield. No third option.

I'd be somewhat happier with any government running on a platform of simple stated goals, then taking actions that have a clear line of sight to those goals, while acknowledging the consequences of those actions. If more affordable housing for people entering the housing market is a really important goal, then so be it.

Right now as far as I can tell, reducing inflation, reducing housing costs, and keeping real estate values high are all equal top priorities, which seems insane to my very simple mind.
    This is essentially the problem.

More affordable housing is a really important goal (to all the parties), but it can’t come at the expense of current owners. It is insane, but when your boss gives you a task with conflicting outcomes, you pretend to make it work as long as it keeps you hired.

The Germans, Swiss, and Viennese all seem fine with having a huge percentage of the population renting, which is much easier to make affordable. But the obsession with ownership and promising people they deserve it and their dreams should come true is how most politicians earn a living.

    .
What if your boss was essentially the main reason why there are conflicting outcomes and refuses to take any accountability for it?

You can become a dictator so they aren’t you boss anymore, but that typically doesn’t have great long-term results for anyone.

I actually wonder what percentage of the voters and politicians would even agree with this.

Making things affordable for one generation at the expense of another generation sounds like a real sound political premise.

But such is the nature of the kleptocratic system we call Canada.

If you have the choice between these two ways of managing housing prices:

    1. Gov't bureaucrats managing supply and demand
    2. The market

Why in the actual fuck would you think #1 is a good idea. Canadians are a bunch of idiots and kerts.

Luckily Canadians don’t need to be too hard on themselves because no country goes with #1, either.

Canadians certainly think that gov'ts should have their hands on the RE market.

Once you realize our government is an unashamed kleptocracy everything they do and say makes a lot more sense.
