All those employees should take their 3 months severance and invest into their own social media company, working 80h weeks to make it happen.

I've heard that the working hours at Microsoft start at 80, so....
Don't be stupid. It's not even close, and they encourage remote work, even before Covid.

I'm not a "tech guy" but isn't the biggest problem at Twitter the culture and too many employees? Seems like Elon is solving both.
Sure some good shit will be set back while nobody works on it. Sure they'll lose some good people. No worries.
Unlike SpaceX, there are still places to go for employment.

So this wont work. Rumor is very low number are complying and Elon is now begging some to stay.

Unless you got them by the ball like a green card, there is no point to stick around.

I think woke culture and overhead are already gone in round 1. You are going to lose real talent this round.

End of Twitter isn't that bad tho. So who's next to step up?

Have friends at Microsoft. 100% not true. They focus on work life balance, mental health, so much so sometimes to a fault detriment to themselves. It's one of the better tech companies to work for.
I believe you today and I knew I'd get called on it - but I'm confident it wasn't always like that. I took a couple Org Analysis (which we obviously called OrgGay) courses and they used MS in Gates's time as an example of a company where the culture was an extremely high work ethic. I recall the book quoting a manager saying "oh, you're going home early?" to an employee who had worked 12hr that day.
Again, a very different time but the theme still stands when employees are dying to get into this prestigious company, once they are in, they will do whatever.

I'm fully on board with twitter never recovering. Don't see that as a big loss. Still kinda suspect this all works out over the long term for Elons investment partners.

    This is accurate.

"We are not seeing the unwinding of a company, but of a person."

That much unchecked power has corrupted the man's mind. It is unfortunate if you youtube some of his thoughts and interviews from 10 years ago.

That was a long time ago, you're describing startup culture. I'm sure every tech company was like that at the beginning. MS isn't that today, nor is twitter yesterday.

Exactly this. It still happens, you're encouraged to work 12-16 hours days so that the value of your stock options are worth something if/when the company goes public. I've left companies that gave me stock options, and they turned out to be nothingburgers, so I'm a little burnt out on that. Give me a solid base salary, and some work/life balance.

Twitter was rampant with toxic culture and overpaid lazy workers.

    Now it isn't.

The snowflake crowd will always be the loudest in the room, and that's where most of the reports of "lul Elon broke twitter" are coming from. I expect things will work out just fine for him.

    Says who?

Lazy according to Musk who demands 80 hour weeks and sleeping at your job?

Whatever you think of Elon or the workers, Twitter was unprofitable. It needs to be profitable, so big changes were required.

Why does it need to be profitable? Share prices show the market did not agree with you.

I think this public reckoning is awesome. If I was a shareholder I would be even happier

A typical twitter employee shows their grueling workday:

Correct about MS today. But Bill was running that show for, what - twice as long as Twitter has existed? And experiencing exponential, start-up like growth for much of that time.
But I don't think it's necessarily true about Twitter yesterday. They haven't been around that long.

Yeah, there's a difference between grinding for a startup that you have equity in and is in the growth phase and a company that just went private and is being speed run into the ground.

No chance I'm busting my ass for the latter for a boss that's knee jerk reacting to running a business every day something new.

I believe that Twitter jobs were seen as prestigious and gravy, so there was high demand for them.
Now Musk is putting an end to the gravy. And temporarily out permanently damaging the prestige
