Default New tire has a gash in the sidewall - Useable?

    Hey All,

My car came with two sets of tires when I purchased it, and just opening up the summer which are brand new, found this -

Has anyone every come across this before? Tire still has full pressure in it but I havent installed it yet.

Is it Junk? Good to go? They are run flats, not that that matters much.

There's surely no repairing that, and it looks pretty deep/big. Will it actually blow out? Very possibly not. But I personally wouldn't use it or you risk a blowout every time you drive. If you decide to use it anyway, make sure it's on the back and not your steering wheels.

I've driven with a gash like that in my youth. Would not do that today, especially not with the family car.

Seems like a consensus. At least I had half a brain to check em all before installing any.

Anyone have a spare Contisport Contact 5 SSR laying around? 255/35R19 would be swell

At least it’s brand new and you only need to replace 1.

Who sold you that wheel as new?

Impossible to say from that photo. I would stop in and have a quick inspection of the affected area. That might just be a flap of rubber in the rim protection area and not into any critical part of the tires structural integrity. That said it could be something catastrophic as well. Need to inspect it closely to have a better idea.

Edit - Those are SSR tires so they are designed to be driven safely (within reason) if the tire does lose air.

Run it. What happens if it leaks or fails? Pull over, install spare and buy a new tire.

I think Bob had the most sound advice.

Picture don’t show the depth of the tear. I’ve had some tears in the rim protector before and it was NBD. But if it goes deeper then I wouldn’t chance it. Probably best to have some tire professionals look at it.

    UPDATE!

Took it to Urban X North, they looked and zero cords showing so tire is good to go. Now the two passenger side wheels are at urban X getting the insane curb rash that accompanied this gash repaired

If you've seen one gash, you've seen em all right? Kinda. Maybe not...

BMW stands for bring my wallet. They never include spare, people should be happy that they provided tire patch kit free of charge
