Default 7 1 audio speaker setup

Just like the thread states, looking to begin building my theatre room. Need everything but figured start with speakers. I want to wall mount my rears and surrounds so can't be too large. In like the size of Bose cubes but they seem to be needing proprietary cables etc

    Any recommendations?

    Thanks

Look up atmos speaker placements. Install speakers in said locations. Profit.

    You’d want a minimum of 5.2.1 setup. That’s 5 speakers 3 front 2 rear, and 2 ceiling speakers, and 1 sub.

Do you have a recommendation on a 5.2.1 receiver? Something that's not bare budget but also not breaking the bank.

Marantz MR601X has been great for me

If you are going to wall mount speakers might as well go in wall imo.

I bought a denon one on clearance at visions for under $500 IIRC.

Edit - found the receipt. AVRX1600H for $498.

Edit2 - denon and Marantz are the same company and pretty much the same receivers other than packaging. Even the UI is the same, I have a non atmos marantz for my living room.

Looked up prices, used 1600H is like $700, the newer 1700H is $950. Inflations a bitch.

To be fair sticker price on these things has always been high. I think I got my Marantz 60% off for like $800

Wow, wonder if 1700 can go that low.

Yes. But what speakers? Spots are already worked in. Basically 2 rear, 2 sides, and fronts plus centre and sub. Receiver to follow but agree with your suggestions.

Speakers are kindof a get what you pay for.

So it really depends what you want / can afford / how much you care.

I installed some $50 Klipsch in ceilings in January for atmos height channels and I was happy with them.

Some would spend more. Some less.

KEF has really good sales prices every once and a while and great reviews. I just picked up 8x 6.5" in ceiling speakers for $170/pair

If you want a good receiver with good room Correction (DIRAC) look at
Pioneer Elite 505 Or Onkyo RZ50
RZ50 is not yet available in Canada. People are waiting for this since Christmas.
Most places sell them for around $1600.

Every atmos receiver has "room correction". It's the nature of Atmos, you plug in speakers in the closest positions, then calibration figures out the position to create a 3d audio space.

I mean I haven't watched the video here, so I dunno how much more difference it would make compared to a bargain bin setup.

You are correct that every Atomos Receiver has basic Room Correction.
Dirac is not a basic room correction.
I have 505 in my Bonus room and IMO there is a big difference between the basic one and Dirac

I am a big fan of Dirac so my opinions may be biased.

The Denon/Marantz audyssey correction is very good and there is an optional to get really into the weeds on correction if you want.

Yeah the correction on the AVRX1600H is very good, the AVRX series has a better Audyssey version than the cheaper AVRS series. I've been quite happy with the AVRX1600H overall, no complaints.

I've fallen a bit behind. What's the main difference between 7.1 (what my theatre room is set up for) and 5.2.1? Just that the side surrounds are mounted on the ceiling instead of on the walls in the latter?

My receiver is a Denon AVR-3312CI. I don't think it has "Atmos".

Atmos (Or DTS:X) is all about moving past channels into 3D spatial audio. Basically they program where sounds are relative to the listener and then accommodate whatever the speaker positioning is to make the sound come from that direction.

In particular with the ceiling speakers is atmos includes actual height positioning into the mix to allow sound to be above you in addition to around you.

It’s actually a way better way for people to do cinema audio. And you can Basically have as many speakers as you can afford.

So if I went the ceiling route those would replace the side speakers? Probably hard to fish that wire in now maybe I'll just leave it as side-mounted??
