For in ceiling Atmos speakers, are coaxial or aimed better?

I wouldn’t personally aim height channels. I’d worry about placement instead.

Placement and Aim are both important. I grabbed 15degree monoprice ones and have them pointed at the listening position.

I’m saying put the speakers in the right place in the first place and let the Atmos software handle the sound space.

The correct solution is more height channels. At least 4.

@benyl heard my 2 height channel setup, and now has his own 4 height setup. I’d say on a budget you can live with 2 heights, still a world of difference compared to old school 5.1 or 7.1 setups. Definitely wire for 4 even if you’re on a budget. Don’t be like me wanting 4 heights but need to rip the ceiling apart to do it.

    Yes.

There are a ton of videos online that talk about placement. Many of them talk about the "cone" of sound and how if you place the heights too far away, you don't hear much.

Many of the videos will make you want 6 heights. 2 is good, 4 is better, but 6 gets you the separation, but also the continuity of having them only 35 degrees apart. If 7.X.6 channel receivers weren't double the price of .4 receivers, I would have gone that route.

If it wasn't so ugly, I would put bookshelf speakers on the ceiling and point them. tilted in ceilings are a good compromise.

I would say that if I was restricted on the number of channels, I would go 5.X.4 over 7.X.2.

Is a different receiver capability required (ie. more expensive receiver) to go 5.X.4 over 7.X.2, or can standard Atmos receiver be configured to have more height channels vs more surround channels?

Every 9 channel Atmos amp, as well as 7 channel Atmos amp with 9 channel processing I've seen can do either.

Then I would just keep going to where you spend another $200 on a 2 channel amp and go 7.2.4.

Many 9.2 channel amps will allow you to pre-out 2 more channels as they can process 11 channels, but only power 9 channels.

    Don't be ghetto like rage2.

I'm probably too late in the game but here are some suggestions
For a receiver here is a good list broken down by budget:
    https://www.reddit.com/r/HTBuyingGui...deo_receivers/
If you're just after a home theatre, speaker quality doesn't matter much. For the most part explosions will sound similar across all brands. If you want to go a bit higher end or if you plan to use it for some music Paradigm is my favorite personally but only available at base electronics and K&W audio.
Visions carries KEF and the Q150 is arguably one of the best bang for buck bookshelves, you find sometimes used for 300ish which is killer for those speakers.
Spend the most money on your sub. Rythmik, SVS, HSU and PSA make the best subs period. SVS is the easiest to get in Canada as they have a couple authorized dealers here. You're better off going dual budget subs than one massive single. Use the sub crawl to find optimal placement

So i've pretty much decided I am going to do the Atmos as this point. Albeit only 2 fronts? It's been suggested to me that I should use the same brand/model line for all speakers to ensure "even" sound distribution? Wondering what your thoughts are re this? OI've been looking more closely at Fluance as reviews seem great and price point in ideal but they dont sell in ceiling so I would have to go with different brand. Thoughts?

My speakers were so cheap I don't even know what brand they are. Zero markings on them when I checked.

"Audiophiles" will tell you that the most important "timbre" matching should be done with the LCR.

    The rest don't matter.

I got lucky and found a set on kijiji recently. So all 7 of my speakers match.
