So if I went the ceiling route those would replace the side speakers? Probably hard to fish that wire in now maybe I'll just leave it as side-mounted??
Here is the Typical Dolby Recommended setup for 7.1. 2

If you don't want to do the ceiling you can go with Atmos speakers that sit on top of the front towers (If you are doing towers).
There are bunch of speakers that offer that,

Or you can go with a front tower that has this inbuilt,

Ok so I bought an AVR and its a 7.2. If I understand this right that basically means 7 speakers plus 2 subs.

I was looking at the R-625FA Tower Speakers by Klipsh as they have built in ATMOS. On the back of the speaker they have two termination blocks. Does this get spliced together in the back and ran to the front inputs on AVR? Or do you wire the fronts to the one and the ATMOS becomes one of the surrounds??

    So confused hahaha

Two of the terminals will be for the front R and L speakers. And 2 get wired as height channels.

Do not splice. Run 2 audio cables or a cable with 4 conductors to them.

Basically the Atmos heights on top are compeltlely different speakers as far as the amp is concerned.

Does your receiver have "Height" speaker output channels? If so that's that will connect to the upper terminals, while the Front output goes to the lower terminals.

If your AVR is 7.2 rather than 7.1.2, you may need to run it as a 5.1 + the Height speakers if your AVR supports it.

Ok so how does that work though on the amp basically the back looks like this? so 4 wires come off 2 posts per side?

The Surround Back outputs on that are assignable via the receiver setup menu and can be used as the Height outputs. You'll need to set up your other speakers as described in the link I posted above as this is not a 7.1.2 receiver.

    See the bottom picture here:

Double check the manual for that amp before you buy atmos capable speakers.

Just don’t want you buying speakers that aren’t compatible with outputting full atnos with height.

You want to find very clear reference to height channels or Atmos capable speakers.

Yes as Berserker pointed out I have assignable rears. I looked in the manual and it also states "This unit is equipped with a decoder that supports Dolby Atmos audio format. The placement or movement of sound is accurately reproduced by the addition of overhead speakers, enabling you to experience an incredibly natural and realistic surround sound field."

So would you run it like he suggests or traditional 7.1?? Last time I dealt with this stuff 5.1 was cutting edge hahahaha

Height channels are more important than 7 speaker surround. So do what he says.

That receiver will only do 5.1.2 for Atmos.

5 = LCR (left, Center, right) and 2 surround speakers.
    1 = Sub
2 = 2 height (ceiling or upfiring) speakers

The floor standing speakers with Atmos speakers on the top will work. you reassign 2 of the surround channels to height and plug them into the atmos upfiring speakers in the floor standing unit.

Thanks that's definately the way im leaning. Figure it's better than a 7.1 layout

I converted my 7.1 to atmos 5.1.2 and it’s a massive world of difference.
