My mom driving a stick (nice softball for ya Beyond) is not remotely a possibility.

If the question was the best subcompact hot hatch, all indications definitely point to the FiST.

Distinct possibility she would buy something new, but I guess the idea is they are open to any options as long as it doesn't require tons of shop/maintenance time.

    Kona
    Fit (2016+)

Anything else? The B200 was an interesting first suggestion, but they are really old now.

Have they considered a 2002 GMC Envoy? What a coincidence, I have one for sale.

I want to see the mental gymnastics behind calling an 18 foot long GM SUV a modern subcompact

Has OP considered a G wagen?

Take a closer look at the Kia Seltos, same thing as the Kona but with a few more features.

Also the Toyota Corolla Cross, which has a huge trunk/hatch area for its size.

For highway driving, the 2022+ Kona is a significant revamp with tonnes more sound deadening compared to 2018-2021. Make sure you try both.

These are both really good suggestions, but I fear their length is becoming too long. The Kona is only 6" longer then a Sonic, but the Seltos is 12" and the Cross almost 18"

Imagine if you had a Triple O that drove fast. That's what we're dealing with here.

Any thoughts on the Kia Soul?

On second thought, is Hyundai still having issues with dropping cylinder liners on their 2.0? I remember that being a thing.

Kona will have a better ride because they have multi-link in the back. Soul has a torsion beam.

Any new Kia Selto's owners on here? Wife is looking for a small SUV (Rav4, Cr-V are too big for her). I'm leaning towards a Subaru Crosstreck or a Forester but she's brought up Kia. The Sorento looks like it will be too long for her so the Selto's looks interesting. Seems a bit underpowered compared to the 2 Subarus unless you go for the highest end model with the turbo, but then the price is more than the Subaru options.

Hyundai Kona gets good reviews, that's the same car I think. I personally like the Tuscon size a little better, but for a small one steltos should be good.

If she wants a really small car like "SUV". The CX3/cx30 is the best in that segment.

My wife was in the same boat, but we ended up with an Encore GX. She liked it better than the Seltos and the Kona. Also a big plus was not having to wait months to get one.

Replaced by CX-30. CX-3 was really small and tough fit for anyone over 5'5".

Every time I think I should give the Korean a try, they either caught with brakes on fire or engine losing cylinder 3 or now exploding seatbelts.

Like how do you even design exploding sealbelts?

I asked her, but she said she doesn't want to look like a poseur.

I never thought about the Mazda. For quite a while, whenever I would see a newer Mazda, they seemed to have a lot of rust on them. We tend to keep cars for a long time so that eliminated them. I should investigate them further as that model does seem to get suggested on various reddit threads as well.

No idea if they are any good, but I see a lot of them on the road.
