You're ignoring or are uneducated in the subject, and that's fine.
A large piece to your argument is gun storage. You are correct a cable lock through the action or a trigger lock is required OR locked and secured in a safe.

A biometric safe is unlocked in 2 seconds, a shotgun can be stored with the action open, and a secondary biometric safe for ammo can be within your original safe.

Locked and loaded in ~7 seconds. Not to mention the sound of a 12 gauge racking would likely be enough to scare someone away.
you think once he's in your room he's gonna give you a 7 second time out to open your safe which likely is not right beside your bed? If he's that far... his intent is bodily harm, if he isn't that far, you will not be able to prove intent in court and you're now the criminal.

also 7 seconds? who in 7 seconds can wake from a sleep and be coherent enough to realize what's happening and get to the gun safe and be confident they're not shooting their kid or some other person who may have legitimate access to the area?

You can have a pistol, unloaded, in a safe next to a bombed up mag. Someone meth head starts kicking your door down, you'll have enough time to retrieve pistol, load, and rack it.

How unsecured is your house that you wouldn't hear someone breaking in?

    Lol Jesus man...
You're anti gun and super against violence, and that's fine.
You choose to run and hide, most would choose to fight.

If you don't have training and trigger control to identify what it is you're shooting at, you shouldn't own a firearm in the first place.

First thing you learn when handling a firearm, never point it at anything you don't intend to destroy, finger off the trigger until you've identified your target.

how do you know their intent when breaking in? without being able to prove self defense, you're the bad guy for attacking them... it's not my rule, it's Canadian justice system's rule. (also with more accessible guns, he's definitely got several from previous B&Es)

    - - - Updated - - -

unless it's targeted, a crackhead's intent is not to kill someone, it's property theft, quick buck for the next hit.

Intent or not, said crack head has entered my home.
From there they have two choices
    1) leave
    2) advance, at that point "he came at me, I feared for my life"

Don't shoot someone in the back.

Plenty of examples of home owners defending their property in Canada and being let off.

Are you genuinely going to let a crack head enter your home and steal your shit while you and your family are home? If so, lol man.... Lol.

regardless if verdict, you want to waste several years of your life in a court room because you shot some crackhead that was trying to steal your doritos?

there are many many more examples of homeowners defending property, not being let off.

We have gone from crackhead stealing cars while someone is fearing harm locked in their basement to "nah bro crackheads steal Doritos!!"

    You're embarrassing yourself again.

Law very clearly states deadly force can only be used if you are defending yourself from an immenent threat.
Someone who broke into my house, lunging at me is an imminent threat.

All gun arguments are void. Best home defence is giant ass dogs. 99.99% effective before your window is even broken by crackheads. The 0.01% stupid enough not to listen to the barks are handled before your even get out of bed.

If someone breaks into my home with my 2 small kids, wife and I, I do t care what their intent is. As far as I'm concerned, their intent is harm and I'm afraid for life.....that's all you need. I'm not pro gun by any means, but fuck around and find out is my opinion on someone in my house without being let in. As someone who gas been through the court after being attacked, I'm not concerned about having a legitimate concern for my life with an unknown person in my house.

Yes the severity would go way up,
but you don't think the likelihood of someone willing to be a thief would go way down compared to our current system of slap-on-the-hand?
I'm sure there's data on this. That's what we should use not feelings.

I'd prefer less guns. Because if we are going to blanket let Ukrainians in that can sink Putins flagship with handheld weaponry, who knows what type of damage can be done with a 9 mm.

Even a non-giant dog, barking is going to make your house the unappealing one. The added benefit is that door to door sales drop to nothing as well, but you need a big dog for that to happen.

If someone is kicking down your door, you're going to have a bit more than 7 seconds to open your safe and get on the phone to the cops. No one is going to be running around clearing their house, but intent and fear for one's life would be pretty easy to articulate if they advance to where you are. And someone who has handled firearms before won't be blasting off at anything that moves in their house in the dark

i could not imagine a situation where a responsible firearms owner would have their home broken in to in the night, and know for a fact that they or some other human were in danger of losing their life, and have time to retrieve their properly stored firearms and ammunition from the safes and used as appropriate force in defense to prevent bodily harm.

anybody who has any expectation of needing their weapons for self defence, will not have them properly stored, thy'll be in their night table drawer or somewhere close to them while they're sleeping.
You don't know many lawful gun owners do you?

Edit: A pistol is a stupid choice for home defense, especially in Canada.
14" 12 gauge with 1x non lethal followed by 5x birdshot
    20" for me with 2x target, 2 #4 shot, 4 BB

Just look at the cities in the states that have decriminalized crime.

Portland, Seattle, San Fran, New York, LA, Chicago, Detroit, etc etc etc...

Its become a plague, there is no accountability, or deterrent.
Even the police have given up going after these people.

I agree, irreplaceable things are hiding in the closet/bathroom with me.

Everything else is insured and easily replaced. What's they gonna take in the 10 mins they have before the cops show up? My Xbox and TV's, cars? Take it. Not worth me staining my floors, walls, emotional damage of my family, cops and court.

If the try to get into that closet though... I'll get new carpet and repaint.

Now if you wanna talk rural home invasion, I might have different answer.
