On a happy note I did the first service for my EV which was nice and cheap. 15k kms in and cost $50. They don't actually change anything but just various checks / inspections. Had 2 software updates they had to do for recalls / service campaign but otherwise was about it.
So to date it's been more reliable than both my Fiesta ST and FR-S that both had to go in for minor warranty repairs in their first years.
Sounds like a fun post-retirement gig in a few years. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote

Every baby boomer technician that I have worked with says the same thing. Back in the 80's fuel injection and computers were introduced. Most mechanics said injection and computers are stupid and just a fad. Carbs are here forever. They said, they saw the writing on the wall and hit the books and learned basic computers. Many mechanics got pushed out of the trade from not being able to keep up with technology.
We now have a rather large technician shortage.
I always ask the other techs that I work with about EV's. I hear, EV's are stupid and just a fad. One of the bigger dealerships here in town has over 50 technicians, only 2 are EV certified. It's about to get really hard to get your rolling super computer fixed.
Many combustion engines cost like 20k to replace.
How is chevy EV reliability? The blazer and bolt don't exactly have good track records. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
The current bearing eating 6.2L isn't exactly engine of the year either.
Bolt was on the old / entirely different platform. Though it still had pretty good reliability it just was slow to charge was the main complaint. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
Haven't heard much on the blazer so I'd presume that means its going fine. Given that Chevy is building all their new EVs on the same Ultium platform you'd presume they'd have to bugs worked out relatively quickly and also be important to fix shit that comes up since it affects all their cars.
Didn't they have a stop-sale on the Blazer for a little while? I recall reading some headlines that indicated that the GM EV platform was, in fact, not fine at all haha.
But it's hand made battery pack with last gen tech with tons of software bugs on the drivetrain, what's not to love? This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
I thought the draw of an EV is there is no mechanical stuff to break because they are so simple!

No money in making products that last a long time and don't need constant maintenance and repair. I am sure they will figure out ways to build in planned obsolescence. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
OTA updates are actually ingenious... a couple of poorly paid programmers write an update to unlock a feature, or optimize a motor or something. Then, they charge huge money to thousands of customers, and install it without any labour. Or better yet, they offer it as a subscription that holds features you've already paid for hostage until you pay the monthly ransom. The Future is Friendly!
On a more positive note, that new Ionic 5 N is getting some great reviews. It actually looks fun to drive and does more than the overplayed 0-60 thing.
You can't software update your way out of vehicle repair. Most failures are on the hardware side of things. You can't program/update a non-communicating infotainment screen.
EV's still have multiple cooling and AC systems that break. HVAC, seats, windows, steering/suspension, brakes, ADAS, body systems are all still virtually the same no matter what the propulsion system. You don't have to replace spark plugs, engine oil, engine air filter. Some spark plugs and filters are not going to off set a failed $6000 electric steering rack that both the EV and combustion models have.
My friend's i8 turned me off of everything electric BMW for eternity. Over $60k in work that they tried to deny warranty on and 6+ months in the shop. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
Estate ain't coming here, only sedan. Pricing is decent. Also, rumor is battery and motor change is already slated for March 2025, so sounds like this iteration didn't even last a year. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote

Little over 1 year update with the Ioniq 5. First year was flawless, no issues with the car, took lots of road trips throughout Alberta and BC with it, ran fine in -35C, and now 15k kms in it the range is still as good as when I got it. Excuse the dusty screen.
Excellent update, still my favourite EV for real life. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
