    Default Electric Vehicle MEGA Thread.

    General EV discussion thread.

I think the Hyundai Ioniq 5 looks badass. And it's much bigger than it looks. Someone went off-topic elsewhere and compared it to a VW Golf, but it's more than a foot longer, and 4 inches wider.

Anyway, Electric Vehicle discussion here guise.

A PHEV with a 50km cold weather range would be great, but they all suck for that.

Well this MEGA thread was a FLOP.

Time to bump it though;, I put a deposit down on a Fisker Ocean Ultra. Sounds like they'll start delivering cars next month but probably going to be a ~12 month lead time for new orders. Hopefully that'll be enough time to see everyone's feelings on it & any early adopter issues pop up. Still not entirely sure how the manufacturer-direct to customer style is going to go when it comes to warranty / service but hopefully have a better idea by then.

I'm planning on my next vehicle and it will be electric again. I need enough room to haul 2 little kids and some gear, but I don't really need another SUV as I have the PHEV cayenne for the other vehicle. My two top contenders now are the A6 Etron Avant or the Id. Buzz, but neither has announced price or availability yet. I'd love a Taycan, but the prices are a bit more than I want to pay.

The ID Buzz looks amazing and would love one but I'm going to assume it'll be a frenzy over it and hopeless to actually get one. Especially when VW doesn't even sell the ID.4 in Alberta but does in other provinces.

Though VW did sell 300k+ BEV last year so maybe they can scale up quickly to meet the demand in a few years.

The hardest part of buying an electric vehicle? Having to tell your dad you're gay.

The VW bus thing looks cool and has a chance at being reasonably priced. Well, as reasonable as you can get in this day and age. But I think the A6 Avant E-tron will break 100K pretty easily, especially with a few options added I can see it coming up to the range of the lower tier Taycans.

If the ID van has anything in common with the ID.4, I would stay far far away. I'm pretty sure the ID.4 was unanimously hated by all the reviewers I follow.

I've got my name down for an A6 e-tron Avant, but I haven't heard anything about build/order guides yet.

It's pretty well liked in Europe where it is already out in the wild. We still don't know what we will be getting in North America other than it will be a long wheel base version. I have a feeling I'll be rocking my old Touareg for a while longer while they roll out these cars.

Brought this home this week. 2023 Ioniq 5 Preferred Long Range RWD. Took reaching out to a lot of dealerships but finally found one for sticker price in Kamloops and scooped it up. Absolutely love this thing, its incredible how smoothly and quite it drives along while still having instant torque for passing with no fuss. First trip was also my first public charging experience and was far easier and faster than I expected.

Overall it looks like I’ll get about 420km (highway) - 480km (city) for range. I pulled in at golden and was surprised how quick it was to get charging. Just pull up, plug it in, and tap a button on the app and it’s going. Takes the same as paying at the pump with a card. The car immediately went to 200+ kw and overall took 19 minutes to bring it back to 80%.

It averaged 16.8kwh/100km so this would be ~320km of range added for a cost of $10. Or $3.12 per 100km = a tad under 2L/100km in equivalent costs even just using rapid chargers. Home will be a bit cheaper yet.

Overall it was great to drive back and we’ll be taking to Vancouver later this month. Zero concerns for taking it on road trips even as everyone makes comments like EVs aren’t useful outside the city. If the napkin math holds it’ll be about $60ish round trip to Vancouver and back.

Wow, that's cheap mileage. That's not a bad looking vehicle, either.

Awesome, I was waiting for you post on the Ioniq 5 after keeping up with your posts regarding buying it. Reading the first paragraph I was already composing a post in my head to ask you about the cost of charging - no need obviously. Great you posted some numbers, I've been wondering what the cost would be for a fully electric car of this type, for highway driving especially.

I'd consider owning one but not having a rear wiper would drive me bonkers more than you guys here already do.

The cost is impacted on the rate the station uses, they can vary a lot so that's something to keep in mind. Although the 'worst' one, Flo, would still be cheaper than driving my Fiesta. So it's all relative.

Some costs from best to worst:
    - On the run - Currently FREE, which we're planning to use a couple to go to Vancouver. There's also a free on in Calgary too.
    - Petro-Can & Electrifiy Canada - 50 cents / min (ish) for 350kW. If you're EV can pull a ton of power it's remarkably cheap, both mine worked out to 20 cents per kWh which isn't far off home prices after all the BS fees
    - Flo - We're going south to Pincher creek soon and planning that route and they have a number of chargers around. They're slower and more costly. 22$ for an hour at 50kW. Roughly double the cost of Electrify Canada and taking 3 times as long. Likely going to be a 60 minute stop so we'll plan food around it but at least they're still options in less trafficked areas. I haven't tried one but will report back after Canada day, supposedly some chargers you can pull higher than their rated speed so maybe it won't be all that bad. We'll see.

Supposedly that's being added for MY2024, I'm hoping a hydrophobic window coating on the back means it's relatively fine without a wiper.
