Serious question: how do you jump start an electric car if it's too cold? Or is that a non-issue?

Exactly the same. The 12V architecture is old old tech.

Pop the hood and jump away.
"The most merciful thing in the world, I think, is the inability of the human mind to correlate all its contents... some day the piecing together of dissociated knowledge will open up such terrifying vistas of reality, and of our frightful position therein, that we shall either go mad from the revelation or flee from the light into the peace and safety of a new Dark Age."

Depends what dies. If your high voltage battery is depleted then you’d need to tow it. That would be user error, don’t let it run dead and charge it before a cold snap like this.

If your 12v battery dies then you could just a booster pack to turn it on then it’ll recharge it from the high voltage battery. Typically though it shouldn’t be an issue because the car monitors the 12v battery and turns itself on to top it up when it senses it’s low. However dead 12v batteries have been a problem for Tesla, Hyundai, Ford, etc at various points but generally it’s fixed with software updates. Like anything in life I wouldn’t buy the first year of any model as there’s always bugs to be sorted out.

Rage2 has a very atypical use-case, and it's not instructive for the average person. Also he's a tall asian, so that all checks out.

I don’t think my use case is atypical. I mean I don’t drive 150km daily, but there’s 1 or 2 days a year that I’m stuck doing it, and it’s usually in the winter.

    Nope, guess it’s 3.

Haven’t even counted hockey tournaments but that’s a whole other use case that I don’t want to think about in an EV.

Yep, your family isn't ready to switch every car to EV yet.

Any hockey family or kids sports oriented family wouldn't be ready to switch, I almost made a move to a model 3 but glad I didn't now. My day on Saturday involved driving to Flames Comm. arenas (16km 1-way), home, then to Don Hartman (45km 1-way), so having a 180km range is definitely range anxiety inducing. As an aside, today is commute downtown, pick up kids from PD day camp, Springbank arena and then over to Don Hartman again for a 7:15 game, this of course is negated by having charging during the day but meh, I can complain more this way.

So through the whole cold snap my range averaged 32kwh / 100kms which works out to 240kms on a full charge.

Yep, less than 50% of your range, but share that online as an objective and true statement and you are a hater lol.

I got shamed for thinking it's unreasonable to have to charge 5 hours for 7 hours of driving during winter

Hybrid's the way to go. I'll go full EV once kids are out of my hair.

Thanks man, it looks very nice. The redesigned front dash on the Porsche website is also pretty slick. It gonna be your next?

I still think it is too small for my family in its current state. We went on a ski trip last week to Silver Star (was planned in advance - really unfortunate timing with the deep freeze) and my wife was even annoyed with how tight ours gets when packed with sports gear and some luggage. As they get bigger, it's gonna be even worse. A roof rack would annoy me. Feel like I need to go bigger.

I'm intrigued with the Model X Plaid. Trying to see if I can make it work. Test drove MXLR week before last, it was fun.

The Multiple Ethical, Environmental, Safety, and Inconvenient issues with Electrical Vehicles

    • The batteries require child slave labor.
    • Mining the materials for the batteries is one of the most violent environmental acts around. To sound like a leftist, you’re almost raping the earth, and it’s a burden borne by third-world countries under heavy Chinese influence.
    • The batteries, when they die, are often too expensive to replace, killing the cars.
    • When the batteries catch fire (and they do, often), that’s it for the car.
    • If you think ordinary batteries are terrible for landfills, EV batteries are worse, way, way worse.
    • The electricity for EVs must come from somewhere, which usually means fossil fuels.
    • Repair costs are incredibly high (which also drives up the overall cost of car insurance for everyone as EVs flood the roads and insurance companies have to adjust to deal with these costs).
    • EVs are generally less reliable than traditional gas-powered cars.
