    Default Passport renewal delays

So make sure your passport is renewed 6 months before you plan to travel I guess? What a shitshow.

As thousands of Canadians hasten to renew their passports before the summer, scores are still camping outside in British Columbia to better their chances of success.

Blankets, camping, chairs and pajamas were all on display on the parking lot median outside the Surrey Service Canada Centre for passport renewal on Wednesday. Many in line spent the night there, shivering in tents as an unseasonable storm approached.

“We showed up here yesterday at 5 a.m. and we stayed here overnight. It’s been horrible,” said Avang Narjali, who is five months pregnant and was accompanied by her one-year-old, father and cousin.

“I’ve been going in and begging them to help us but they just keep giving us the same answer.”

Six months might not be enough. We needed a few in our house this past winter, applied in November and still didn't have one of them two weeks before travel at the end of March. Had to spend several hours on the phone several times to raise enough shit to have it "fast tracked" and we picked it up downtown two days before travel. It took an additional six weeks to get our original birth certificate (under 18 applicant) back after the fact. Bunch of useless idiots.

Always time waiting in line for good weather, if you can.

Having this issue as well, applied months ago for our toddler, was told we had enough time for our trip in June, lo and behold it still hasn't been processed. It takes 50 calls to even try and get through the phone lines, and then they just say call back and won't transfer to urgent until 10 days before travel. They've created a disaster of a system, so we are back to calling and trying to get them to transfer to HH. It seems the best way is to wait, buy a ticket, and get it days before travel through the urgent system...Nobody else can get passports.

it is. $50 with a plane ticket within 10 days. But be prepared to wait at Harry Hays. I waited 3 hours to get a passport for my kid. It was weird because plenty of people in line behind me came in and left. I don't know why I had to wait longer than others. They may have had appointments for longer. I got one right away because we were travelling in 6 days from when I called.

I was kinda thinking the same thing. The whole family's passports expire in 2024, and maybe it is worth renewing now. Isn't renewing online a thing? Maybe not, IDK.

Id say while you have a valid passport, hold onto that sucker.

For us, one daughters password is expired, the other doesn't expire until November 2024. I won't be looking at renewing that good one until around January 20234, no sense in handing over a perfectly good password to potentially be lost/delayed to affect future travel. I expect a year from now our government will still suck, but this is probably peak renewal season and should get better with time.

    When did you apply?
We did our child's application in late Jan (Mailed in) and was back in our hands before Mar for June travel.

I also see appointments available to be booked at Harry Hays for next week.

I went the other day for my daughters passport renewal, I got told that you can only apply within 25 days of your travel date, and you have to bring proof of travel with the documents.

Still waiting for wife's. Been 4 months and had not even been looked at according to gov't officials phone center.

Had to cancel a trip because we weren't willing to redo the application as rush, go get new photos, wait a day in line to maybe (gov't doesn't guarantee shit) get the passport in time to travel that same morning.

    Not worth the stress.

Sorry, your trip wasn’t worth the $50 rush fee and some paperwork?

Sounds like the trip’s fault lol

Sounds like someone could book a flight <10 days out and then cancel / reschedule... Beats going through the standard process and not knowing if you'll actually get a passport in 3 months

I'm curious about the 3 hour wait - was that from start to finish, or was it a 3 hour wait to pick up your expedited passport?

My personal best was 4 hours from start to finish... just moved, couldn't find passport (or birth certificate) the morning of my flight for a friend's wedding... bumped the flight to later that afternoon and made it in time for the rehearsal dinner.
