sold our house last month. Hired a cleaner to do 8 hrs of cleaning. Got a complaint from the sellers that the house wasn't cleaned to their standards. $%^#$% them.

There was one item left under the stairs(lamp) in the basement and one in the garage(shop vac items) and they made a point that they didn't want them.

From what I understand your supposed to leave the house in the same condition it was in when yhey bought it.... with that said if there's nothing specified in your contract nothing can be done.

If a house is excessively dirty, can't you go back and charge them for cleaning? When I took over my condo, the sellers left a bunch of random stuff and we charged back a fee for a guy to essentially do a dump run.

How to you expect to collect this fee?

After close? If you have a breach of contract you can try to sue for it. glwt.

Before close? Basically unless you are willing to withhold funds on possession day I don’t know what you expect to do.

This is why SOME contracts have provisions in place for the place to be professionally cleaned with receipts, it gives you a leg to stand on for lawyers to withhold funds if this is not done. But if it wasn’t in the contract you are up shit creek without a paddle.

I’d rather have no repairs, Our previous owners were not hands on people and used wood putty to fill all the holes for pictures, tapestries, etc.

Fixing someone else’s idea of “repair” is so much worse than doing it right the first time.

When buying an old house, it's better to have it completely OG for that reason. Lots of people think they're handy and do quality work. They don't.

Our first place in the separated garage.. they had a car backed as close to this wall and all their move out boxes infront during inspection and pre-possession walkthrough. Quite the treat to walk in on possession. I think he backed into it at full speed with his car as quite the chunk missing

Maybe worth fixing something like this, but i'd leave the nail holes.

So let me get this straight:

Someone buys a USED house, knows there is damage/where there will be damage, and doesn't stipulate it as being fixed as part of the sale and then bitches about it afterward when it isn't fixed?

Why WOULD it be fixed? Like I have a used car with a blown motor, person agrees to buy it, pays for it, "why is the motor not fixed?" Really?

Jesus, these must be the same people you need to tell a used car sale is "as is, where is, no warranty".

It’s all in the shareholder agreement.

Yeah... see... that's excessive. I bet a case could be made to have them pay for that - but even then with a moderate expense, is it really worth it?

It sorta seems that the window is/was leaking and they pulled off some drywall to see the extent of the damage.

Literally just moved in the past couple weeks, we roll with leave nail holes but patch/paint anything larger. We always do a deep clean to the point we might as well be professional cleaners, or more so do a better job than professional cleaners.

We took possession of our new home this past Friday, looked good initially and even had a card left by a "professional cleaner", sellers just packed their shit and moved out, zero cleaning, we've spent more time cleaning than we have unpacking. It's flat out rude, not sure if they thought their cleaners would actually do something but there was zero evidence anyone had cleaned anything in the house.

Clean your bathrooms, sweep and mop, vacuum, wipe down any walls that need it. If you get it professionally done, then make sure you're getting your money's worth.

We took possession of our current place back in December and it was impeccable they left it in fantastic condition, unfortunately we ended up doing some renos so that didn't last long and had to get cleaners in afterwards. The only hole left was a screw for a picture within a niche.

Note to self, include "professional cleaning" in the purchasing clause.

It helps for sure but professional cleaners aren't as great as you'd hope.

I've only lived in new homes before, but anytime I've bought a used car it goes directly to the detailer. Along the same vein, if I bought a house that was previously lived in, I'd hire my own cleaners before I moved in, regardless of whether the homeowners cleaned or had professional cleaners in.

Usually worth cleaning and painting anywhere you move into.

Wife and I were in the same boat as many of you.

Deep cleaned our old house top to bottom, even wrote a welcome letter to the new owners outlining where their mailbox is, garbage days and the names of the neighbors.

Moved into our new house and they literally packed and left, there was even an unflushed toilet. Absolutely disgusting.
We spent three days cleaning and painting prior to moving our stuff in.

Our place was a mixture of brutal and acceptable last summer. They had someone come do the lawn etc the day before possession, house was relatively clean but bathrooms weren’t great. The fridge and dishwasher were absolutely disgusting, mold in the fridge and the dishwasher I ended up having to replace. They also left various crap behind, the garage was the worst. The blue/black/green bins were also fucking biohazards.

This is the worst thing ever, even companies with great ratings its like "did you even clean??"

The problem with cleaners is that unless you are there to supervise (at which point you may as well do it yourself), they'll always cut corners as most people don't notice.
